Fine, You Can Sit With Us: Lee Daniels Finally Adds Tyrese To “Empire” Cast

July 10, 2015  |

When I first heard that “Empire” creator Lee Daniels finally announced Tyrese’s addition to the growing list of celebrities making appearances in the upcoming season, my mind immediately took me back to The Temptations TV movie. You know, that scene where David Ruffin is practically salivating at the Motown New Year’s Eve party, secretly hoping and praying that he will be invited on stage to perform with the group? In other words, dude has been ready for the coach to put him in the game for a hot little minute.

Now don’t get me wrong, David killed once he was finally on stage (Just like I’m sure Tyrese will). But the thirst was real. And apparently, it still is. For quite some time now, Ty has been dropping hints that he’s trying to be down with #TeamEmpire. It all began with a March Facebook post in which he joked about wanting to be reunited with former on-screen love interest, Taraji P. Henson, who plays Cookie on the popular series.

I’m not cool with all these dudes feeling all up on Yvette and Its on TV? I heard they call her Cookie now? The homies are telling me I gotta gotta get my bitch back.. I guess I gotta change my name too and go do some show called #Empire? Cause that’s where Yvette is now under her alias #Cookie? Damn…. see you soon

He later mentioned in an interview that he was actually in talks to appear in season one, but personal matters supposedly kept him away.

“I was supposed to be on season one of ‘Empire,’ and I was in and out of court fighting for a personal matter with my 7-year-old, so I wasn’t able to do the show. That’s the truth,” he told Huff Post Live. “I don’t like this Derek Luke dude kissing all over my girl. I don’t like Terrence [Howard] kissing all over her. It bothers me, and we’re gonna have to figure this shit out.”

According to Ty, his friends Taraji and Lee were also unhappy when season one plans fell through.

“Taraji and Lee Daniels were very, very disappointed — and I was too — that I couldn’t do it,” the actor added.

Anyway, after quite a bit of campaigning for a second chance, Tyrese was given another opportunity to take part in the popular series. Thursday, Lee announced on Instagram that the “Shame” singer will appear in season two:

Yes! Stop asking!!! #tyrese is coming on #empireseason2 And NO, I am not leaving my show! I just wrapped my 1st episode … I got #richardpryor to do! It was so much fun directing our wonderful cast … I miss and love them ALL… Sorta sad cause I’m not with them now but I’ll be back for the finale!! In the meantime we got some badass directors stepping in!!! #family #fox #empire #gottagettomakingmovies #iaintmadeamoviesincethebutler.

The exact nature of Ty’s role has not been disclosed, but it looks like he may be a love interest of Taraji. He confirmed on Instagram:

Fuuuuuccckkkkk that I’m coming to get my girl back……. I wasn’t gonna say shit – Lee Daniels just made the announcement #EMPIRE SEASON 2 Jody back on his bullshit – Taraji I mean Yvette I mean #Cookie I’m sorry I wasn’t there #Curtains #DropsMicExitStageLeft

So, are you excited about his “Empire” debut? Hopefully, his storyline will be juicy.

And oh yeah, speaking of Ty, his new album Black Rose is in stores today.

MN, y’all are really some haters. Who cares if he made it known he wanted to be on Empire or not? Tyrese is not a perfect human being, but y’all give this dude mess for every move he makes in life, every breath he takes. Here you are with your stories trying to tear him down, again. Give it a rest.

Sadly it sounds as if thís show is becoming a caricature of itself. In all fairness, I haven’t seen a single episode so maybe I shouldn’t judge it so harshly, but it sounds like nothing more that a spectacle from what I’ve read–and that’s always been my complaint with Daniels’ work

    • FactsOnly

Ditto…I haven’t watched either but from what I’ve read and heard I won’t be. I don’t find ignorant brothers and sisters amusing, it’s quite sad actually we’ve come to far for this kinda nonsense.

  • Kiara

Let’s just see how he does

  • I_am_a_Gladiator/Scandalista

PLease lets not overdue it with the celebrities

  • MocaPretty

Okay the Baby Boy theme has been done TOO DEATH now sure why Tyrese is joining the cast. Too many “stars” on one show is just too much. Lee Daniels is just doing the most now

  • OhLordt

*Throws crate of water into Costco cart* Need to catch up on my charity work anyway. Hang on Ty, we comin’!

  • V On Wry

I don’t know how I feel about this :-/ not a Tyrese fan

    • Teek

Touché on this. He’s so iffy to me. I keep feeling like something is going to come out about him. But… *sips tea*

      • V On Wry

Lol what kind of something are you talking about? I just don’t like how misogynistic/chauvinistic he is!!! Ugh!!! His Twitter rants/Instagram BS do the most sometimes; it clouds my judgment when I watch him act sometimes.

Lee Daniels is adding so many people on to Season 2. I just hope they aren’t going overboard. Can’t wait for the new season to start.

As if he lobbied for Taraji to get work on his gigs. Now he is Fast and Furious riding Taraji’s coat tails. Ole sorry arse creep.

    • GoldenGirl;)

      LOL! Nice one……

    • Truth

Wow that’s a great point. I’ve always said how interesting there are black men but not one black woman…..great point indeed.

      • 1Val

Some successful blacks covet being “the token ones”. Many are disinterested in diversity. Black male actors fail to champion black actresses to appear in movies and television shows with them. If they wanted black actresses to play their co-workers, wives, lovers, friends and relatives in movies I’m sure studios would hire them. Taraji stated she wouldn’t have done Empire without Terrence Howard. But when Terrence was in Iron Man for a hot second he didn’t display loyalty to Taraji by insisting she be given a role in movies with him. Tyrese has an ugly opportunistic spirit towards black women.
