7 Comebacks in Music We’d Like to See

May 25th, 2011 - By Victoria Uwumarogie

Don’t you hate when someone comes along in music that has everything you’re looking for in an artist, and then suddenly goes MIA? It hurts when you try and keep a positive outlook about their unexpected absence, hoping they’re only taking a short break and not an indefinite sabbatical, but you’re only teased with occasional features on mixtapes or paparazzi discoveries on the streets as they wear clothes no sane person would be caught dead in. But this happens far too often to a lot of our talented musicians, and breaks a little too long can have disastrous consequences if they decide to revive their careers. They’re either accepted with open arms or quietly ignored as old news. And some careers just fall apart (see Whitney…). But here are artists who, despite the constant changes in music, have reserved space on our packed iTunes lists for their hopeful returns.

  • Pearl

My question is, where are the producers for the better music and singers, like RL,Teddy Riley, Terry lewis and Jimmy Jam and others??The newer music and singers really stink!!! While Trey Songs and Jeremih are ok, the cant hold a candle to Jodeci and Dru Hill!!

  • melissa

The Lauryn picture scared u? lol DeAngelo almost made me fall off the chair lol

Shai. The only reason that I won't say Boyz II Men is because they never stopped recording. They'll be at the Essence Music Festival.

If you're going to use "we" in the title of your article, shouldn't you at least try to include "we" in the consideration of your musical choices? "We" like a wide range of artists and talents, not exclusively those of the darker persuasion (and the token white chick doesn't make up for this). Just as a white columnist wouldn't dare to list only white artists (and a token brown one, to appease the haters) for fear of being eternally labeled "racist," you shouldn't do the reverse for the same reason. Just because your "target audience" is of a certain demographic, doesn't make it right.

Yesssss! Agree 110% with all those.

Adele is no substitute for Amy Winehouse. Amy needs to get it together with the quickness.
As for consistency in rap, try Blitz the Ambassador, he's a Ghanaian-American from BK. His CDs, "Stereotype" and "Native Sun", are on point!

Mariah sang real songs back in the day where you could really hear her voice. Last album she sang a real song on was Butterfly. When you have a 5 octave vocal range you should not be singing songs like "Touch my body" Remember her song "Let me Go"? That was real singing!

    • D-Chubb

      Remember "Vanishing"? Wowww!

I would love to see Outkast make a comeback and show these young punks how to do it, Missy Elliot as well

  • I LOVE Old School

I miss En Vogue and SWV, too!! I loved my girl groups. I also want the OLD Beyonce to come back too lol. I don't know–maybe it's the music industry. I feel like a lot of the artists I used to love, I can't really listen to anymore (in terms of their new stuff) smdh. But Lauryn, Mariah, Whitney, and Mary–those are my GIRLS!!

  • theBlackPocahontas

oh please a Jodeci is what folks want to see not another dull K-Ci and Jo Jo album. I am so not a fan. And they can sing their songs from back in the day forever. Now if they made a song today, like that it wouldn't be good. That's just like Trey SOngz or anyone else singing their hits 20 years from now.

I do however feel it would be a miracle. I would also like to hear a Silk album as someone pointed out

  • Stephanie

I want Alicia Keys to go back to her Keys in A Minor/Dairy days … just her & her piano … I've enjoyed all of her cd's, but those 2 cd's were R&B/soul/musicianship @ its best!!! AND I would love for Brandy to go back to her roots too … love me some B-Rocka!!! :-)

  • db

If u can’t come up with a real list don’t make one, no one wants to see tribe called quest and Mary and mariah never left!!! P.s lauren hill is a tragic wrap!!!!

  • alley

boys 2 men really miss them

    • Pearl

, Boys 2 Men as a quartet, not as a trio…The baratone is truly missed…Dru Hill can really sang!!!Where are they now?? Mariah when she used to really sing, like on vision of love? Blackstreet or Guy without the attitude!! If you are not coming back just say so…Dont keep your fans who want to hear from you waiting much longer? What about the group Next (too close, wifey) even without the vocals. the music was great!!!

  • lunden

I agree with Danielle. I keep trying to tell people that my fave group, Outkast, is not broken up. They are in a legal battle with the record company that basically owns their name"Outkast". They can only legally put out music as two separate entities or feature on someone's song without the name Outkast. Ever notice the remixes where both of them are featured but it lists them as Big Boi and Andre 3000? Big Boi said it when he released his last album..he's got so many songs with Dre that he wanted to put on the album but the old company wont let him do it without taking ownership of it or taking him to court. He is pissed off! And so am I.

  • Danielle

Brandy, toni braxton, silk… I could go on and on. I wish we could go back to when music was actually good!

  • Student21jrh

    Monica….she is it….

  • Andre Nevermind
