She Tried It! Aqua Cycling
June Ambrose is my style and beauty guru and one night while scrolling through her Instagram, I discovered how June remains incredibly toned: aqua cycling. After doing some research, I learned I could take a class at Aqua Studio NY, located in the Tribeca section of Manhattan. Since I love to swim I knew the class would be a breeze however I was a bit nervous about the cycling part. Cycling usually intimidates me because people who participate usually take it very seriously, like it’s the Tour De France or something. #NoShadeDoYaThang
When I go to the gym or workout, I like to be in my own world without feeling like I’m competing with the person next to me. My regular exercise routine consists of doing cardio on the treadmill or lifting with arm weights but that can get boring even if you have the latest Soca or Trap music blaring in your ears. So, one Saturday morning I opted to take an aqua cycling class instead, and when I entered Aqua Studio NY, I forgot I was in the busiest city in the world.
The energy in Aqua Studio NY was calming and the staff, friendly. Its locker rooms are immaculately clean and you don’t even need to bring a lock to protect your belongings. After you change into your swimwear and place your belongings into the locker, you create a code on the door of the locker so it can be locked. Your personal code also allows you to open your locker.
Afterward, you head into the cycling room and rinse underneath a showerhead before dipping into the pool. The pool has about 13 bicycles and is 4 feet deep. Once you choose a bicycle, you can adjust its seat to your liking and wait for class to begin. My instructor was Moses (pictured above), who was a true gem. He began class with warm up stretches on the bicycle and although the class was an hour long, it was broken down into three segments. In each segment, Moses taught a new exercise routine that works out both your arms and legs. In his soothing voice, Moses reminded class members to not get distracted by what was happening in their life: “This hour is your time, so forget all the expectations and demanding people in your life,” he told us. And I obliged.
If he sees you are struggling with the exercise assignment or looking at your peers for guidance, he gently tells you to trust and not judge yourself. Moses also reminds you to always have your back straight and that you are beautiful, confident and secure.
Besides jogging your memory about the worth you possess, the other benefits of aqua cycling are toning your legs to help keep cellulite from forming (the friction between water and your skin helps massage, stimulate and drain the lymphatic system, which then eliminates cellulite). Oh yeah, and burning about 800 calories in one hour!
After the class, I felt an increase in my energy and it was like the stress melted off of my body. Usually my neck and back have a lot of tension but after the class I felt extremely relaxed. That same night I went to a party and the next morning, I didn’t feel sore.
