A relaxing day at the park ended in tragedy when a teen mom was killed and her son was seriously injured by a falling tree branch.

According to WSBTV 2, LaRena Drayton, 16, was sitting on a bench at Peek Park in Georgia with her 1-year-old son, Jeremiah Drayton, when the branch collapsed.

Drayton’s sister later told reporters that the teen mom had just taken her son off of the baby swings and moved to the bench when she heard “something crack.” She tried to get out of harm’s way with the infant in her arms, but, unfortunately, she was unable to get away in time.

The branch collapsed on the baby and Drayton, who was left unconscious. The young woman was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died the following day. Jeremiah was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in Sandy Springs where he is being treated for a skull fracture.

A spokesperson for the Cedartown Parks and Recreation Department expressed sorrow in an issued statement following the teen’s passing.

“Our hearts have been heavy since learning of the tragic accident that took place June 19 at Peek Park. The passing of Miss Drayton has left our city saddened, and we grieve alongside the family for a life that was undoubtedly cut short. We continue to pray for the recovery of Miss Drayton’s young son who was seriously injured in the accident. We ask that everyone keep the entire family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

The department is looking into why the tree limb collapsed, but as of right now, a representative says that the tree appears to be healthy and that Drayton’s death may have been the unfortunate result of a freak accident.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up by the teen’s family to assist with funeral and medical costs.
