FOH: Iman Shumpert Thinks “Empire” Characters Are Based On He And Girlfriend Teyana Taylor
It’s official. Everyone is after a piece of the “Empire” pie. First, 50 Cent claimed they jacked his marketing scheme. Then, Joseline Hernandez joked that Cookie was trying to be like her. Now, Cleveland Cavaliers player Iman Shumpert, of all people, is claiming that he and his girlfriend Teyana Taylor inspired characters Hakeem and Tiana.
“I don’t watch that stuff, man,” he told Northeast Ohio Media Group with what journalist Chris Hayes says was an annoyed look on his face.
Apparently Shumpert is bothered because he believes the network copied Taylor’s style when creating Tiana.
“They’re using my girl’s character, her style, her look and she’s not getting anything for it,” he explained. “They didn’t even change her name. They could have at least let my girl audition for the part instead of stealing her character completely.”
He then went on to discuss Hakeem.
“And come on man, they’re really using a guy with a flat-top like me. Come on. That’s ridiculous. They never called us. We were blindsided. We found out by our family and fans when the show aired.”
Yes, Hakeem does sport a flat-top and Tiana has some pretty big hair, similar to that of Teyana’s, but honestly dude is reaching.
“I don’t see how they can deny it,” he said. “Everybody knows.”
As for whether or not there will be legal action taken against FOX, Shumpert had this to say:
“Her fans are more mad about it than I am,” Shumpert said. “I’m a ball player, but that’s her field. That’s what she does. Me personally, I don’t plan on taking any action but I don’t know about her.”
