Yvette Cormier’s Planet Fitness membership was revoked after she complained and reported a transgender woman for using the same locker room, as her. She claimed she was scared and confused when she saw the transgender woman enter the locker room.

Cormier said the woman looked like a man and reported the incident to the front desk and wrote to Planet Fitness’s corporate offices, as well. Planet Fitness responded to Cormier’s complaints by stating the transgender woman is allowed to use the women’s locker room because she identifies with the female gender. Because Cormier violated Planet Fitness’s “No Judgment Zone Policy,” they decided to cancel her membership.

In a statement about their decision, Planet Fitness said:

“Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity. In expressing her concerns about the policy, the member in question exhibited behavior that club management deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was canceled.“

LGBT activist Char Davenport believes Planet Fitness should have private showers and changing areas for those who identify as transgender so they are not discriminated against those who don’t understand the trans community. Davenport also hopes this is a learning experience for Cormier who said she would not have complained about the incident if she knew about the company’s “No Judgement Policy.”

The company’s policy can be found on their site or written around their gym facilities. What do you think about the decision?
