Octavia Spencer To Play God In “The Shack” Film Adaptation
Octavia Spencer has scored the role of a lifetime. According to USA Today, the Academy Award-winning actress has been cast to play God in the film adaptation of William P. Young’s The Shack.
“Those are huge shoes to fill. Morgan Freeman has done it and he’s been quite effective. I’m just going to try to bring some wisdom to it…It’s overwhelming,” Spencer said of the casting.
While excited about the project, the 44-year-old says she realizes that her role may stir up a bit of controversy.
“It’s like ‘Oh, my God! Someone is playing God.’ But people have to remember it’s a manifestation of God. How (the film subject) sees God. Not necessarily how or who or what God is.”
As for what she’s doing to prepare for the role, Spencer had this to say:
“You don’t prepare for God.”
In case you’re unfamiliar with the best-selling novel, check out a brief description below.
“Mackenzie Allen Phillips’s youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever.”
The film adaptation will be directed by Stuart Hazeldine.
