This past weekend, Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kodjoe’s daughter, Sophie, turned 10. The big 1-0 is always a big deal for a growing child, but it was also major for Kodjoe, who penned an open letter to Sophie on social media praising her.

Sophie was born with spina bifida, a congenital disorder where the bones of a child’s spine don’t form properly around their spinal cord. Sophie’s form of spina bifida is not as severe as it could be (for instance, she could have fluid buildup in the brain or a lack of feeling in certain limbs), but it does impact her bladder. Boris and Nicole have to catheterize Sophie every few hours to keep a buildup of urine from passing into her kidneys and from there being uncomfortable pressure on her bladder. She’s proven to be a little trooper as she’s grown and dealt with this disorder, and on her 10th birthday, Kodjoe wanted to let her and the world know how proud he is of her strength:

To My Little Heart.

The day I met your mother I knew I was ready to be a man. The day I met you I became one. You’ve shown me what true strength and courage is and you taught me that the love of faith and the faith in love is one and the same.

I’m in awe of your ability to defy the odds and I marvel at the confidence with which you produce miracle after miracle. You smile your way through life and your light touches everyone around you.

I’m proud of you because you are your mother’s daughter, I’m proud of you because you are

Sophie Tei-Naaki Lee Kodjoe.

Happy 10th Birthday my little heart. I love you more than you will ever believe.

Just tugs at the heartstring doesn’t it? Happy belated birthday Sophie!
