Kevin Durant Accepts The Blame For Broken Engagement: “I Didn’t Love Her The Right Way”
A couple of summers ago, we were thrilled to learn that Oklahoma City Thunder player Kevin Durant proposed to fellow pro-baller Monica Wright. We were equally disappointed when the 26-year-old WNBA player announced that they had called off their engagement. While she wouldn’t go into specifics, she did say that they were simply going in two different directions and going his way would have been a compromise of her faith.
“I was engaged last year and it kind of changed that relationship big time because I was going in a direction that unfortunately a lot of people aren’t willing to sacrifice their lifestyle for,” she said.
Now, Kevin is speaking about their split and he seems to be accepting the blame for his role in their broken engagement.
“I had a fiancée, but…I really didn’t know how to, like, love her, you know what I’m saying?” he told GQ magazine. “We just went our separate ways.”
According to the Oklahoma forward, he was overcome with emotion one night and asked his baller bae to marry him. While he was thrilled to be engaged to Wright, he reiterates that he didn’t know how to love her the right way.
“We was just hanging out, chilling. And I felt the energy. I felt, I need to do this right now. And I just did it. I was like…We’re engaged right now? We’re about to get married? So I was just like, cool! I love this girl. But I didn’t love her the right way.”
Sadly, Durant says that he doesn’t have a lot of hope when it comes to love and frequently wonders if he’ll be alone forever.
“I go to sleep at night, like, ‘Am I gonna be alone forever?’ Am I gonna be alone forever? Am I gonna have kids?” he confessed. “I feel like there’s no hope. But I still gotta have faith.”
It’s unclear if Monica is open to reconciliation, but if she is, hopefully he’ll be willing to do the work that is required to make this relationship work.
