Don’t be Triflin’ in Your Tipping

April 27th, 2011 - By Khadija Allen

Do you know everything there is know about tipping? Paying the bill when you take a vacation, dine in at a restaurant, or receive a manicure only accounts for half of what establishments expect. It’s also customary to leave gratuities or tips as appreciation that you (the customer) valued their service. Here’s a short list of some careers that heavily rely on tips and how you can redeem them:

Many of the folks rely on tips because their hourly wage is below the minimum. I have seen published rates for wait staff as low as $2 per hour plus tips. Delivery drivers are often not reimbursed for gas, so your tip helps with that. The article also missed a few points. You should tip your food delivery person and valet parking attendant more if the weather is bad. You should also tip the people who clean your hotel room. I feel you on tipping your hair stylist. The rule of thumb is the more you go then the less you tip. I know sisters who have a standing appointment to get their hair done every week. They do not tip. As for the nail technician, if you had to scrub folks filthy feet, wouldn't you want a tip? I always tip bartenders. In a busy bar, the tippers get better service. You tip for the luxury of not having to fetch your own food, make your own drinks, etc. If you cannot afford to tip properly, then you may not be able to afford the service or to eat out on a regular.

Everyone has gotten out of hand with this whole tipping thing.

I am not going to pay to get my nails done and then turn around and tip them. Be for real.

Some of this stuff is already established but most companies now want you to continue to pay these expensive prices, not pay your workers and then expect me to turn around and tip them.

Next I will need to tip the cashiers, the fast food people etc. Hell SOnic expects you to tip the folks on skates. Um that is part of your job decsription

    Its ridiculous.

And I'm not tipping my hairstylist either. Your charging $75 or more. You don't retouch my hair for free either. Your tip is the money I pay you for your services.

And, let's be clear, you DO NOT get a tip for horrible services PERIOD. If you give good service I will tip you customary. If you give great services I will tip you more than that. The money I save for NOT tipping horrible waitstaff is what I use to reward those who give excellent service.

But let's be clear, how the hell do you demand someone get a tip that's more than what the Lord requires in tithes? Just think about that

Broke college student… That is I… But I will always tip at LEAST 3 dollars (that is a LOT for me these days) for if I have it more than 5 dollars. When I graduate and get a well paying job I'd go up to 10/15.

Then dont go to out to eat if you cant tip…..you say find another profession, she is in school most likely it works with her schedule.

@arianna sweetheart if we got ‘another job’ you wouldn’t have anyone to act as the liaison between the kitchen and/or bar.

Outside of that, we need to drop the 15% nonsense it is 18%-20%. It is contingent upon where you work, because I work in a 5 diamond hotel and 15% doesn’t pay my bill when I am used to receiving 20% – 50%…know your boundaries

or maybe instead of going hard at folks for you not receiving whatever you feel you are entitled to in TIPS – which you know isn't an entitlement right? then you should protest the crappy wages the hotel pays you.

^^^^So get a new profession. Teachers, firefighters, police officers don't get tips for doing their jobs.

I really wish people would tip a lot better considering all that we do as servers, it bothers me when people tell me how nice, sweet and how great a server I am but then leave me two dollars. As a young black woman who is also a student
I find older black woman are the worse because not only can they be bad tippers but they can also be very rude no matter how nice or accommodating you are to them. They treat you like you are beneath the because you are waiting on them instead of doing what you have to to pay for school. We make at best $3.63/hr to waiting on people who treat you badly.

Well. Done. I can’t tell you how dissapointed I was when I found out that my people are terrible yuppers! I tip according to service and if there is a problem, I speak with the manager and have my server/worker switched. That way I enjoy my experience and my tip is not wasted.
