How to Successfully Network at a Shi-Shi Cocktail Event

April 20th, 2011 - By Grace N. Edwards

Work the Right Outfit

It’s important to rock the right ensemble at a shi-shi event. You want to look elegant and pulled-together, but don’t go overboard. That satin, floor-length ball gown may be a little much. Also, save the plunging necklines and tight minidresses for the club. You want to be taken seriously, so put the goodies away. Invest in a flattering, but modest cocktail dress or suit so that you look both polished and professional.

The follow up is so important. So many people come to these kinds of events, talk, take business cards and don't connect. The point of networking is to connect with the people you meet and build relationships so don't forget that part! :-)

Networking is definitely an art and especially at these kind of shi-shi-foo-foo events. I have a 1 drink limit of clear drinks (white white or spritzer, sprite, etc..) just to take the edge off. NEVER red wine and NEVER eat at the event even if they are serving hor d'oeuvres. Eat before you go. I also try avoiding talking too much business and try to keep it light. People do business with people they like as a person, as opposed to their business accomplishments. The follow-up meeting is where the business conversations come into play. If you really want to make an impression, do something nice for the person after you meet them. If you know they are looking for a good caterer or real estate agent or something, find them one or send them a gift certificate to try a new service. Show them what you can do for them and they will show you what they can do for you.
