Ten Actresses Who Don’t Get Their Due

April 12th, 2011 - By Natali Rivers

It’s a beautiful thing that we have so many amazing black actresses working today. It’s refreshing to see Halle and Taraji and Kerry gracing the covers of magazines on a regular basis. However, there are a few thespian sistas who don’t always get as much shine as they deserve. Here are a few:

Where is Loretta Devine? With the amount of time that woman has been acting, she deserves far more respect than she gets in Hollywood. And you're right, we do need "fresh faces," but the amount of promotion and roles these women get does not compare at all to their white counterparts. We need to promote all the faces we have as well as "fresh faces," because right now, a lot of the women on this list are fighting for roles, even at their caliber.

Best actress in world (I agree all ideas of them_)

I thought I was gonna see actresses like Nicole Beharie (American Violet), Rutima Weasley (Trueblood), Aisha Tyler (Archer, only black girl on Friends) on this list. As someone already mentioned above, all of these actresses are working and have gotten some recognition and are known in the Hollywood community. I think we should start looking at black Indiependent cinema to see some true up and coming talent.

Of all the women mentioned Thandie Newton is definitely the most talented and deserving. If you haven't seen her in 'Besieged', you should definitely check her out. Thandie is very likely cheated out of roles because she is not viewed as black enough. Too bad because her range is incredible.

I would like to see Regina Hall in more roles. I find her refreshing as an actress.

Kimberly Elise always gives the same perfomance. Perhaps it seems that way because she always plays the victim.

I completely agree with Anala. I expected to see new faces but this is just the usual suspects part 2.

Interesting that 80% of those Black Actresses date White men.

I guess that is par for the course in Hollywood.

WELL 100,000,000% of BLACK men are MATING and LEAVING Black women for WHITE women. SOOOOOOOOO what's your point?

    Thandie Newton is Black again-interesting….

    • Prissy

She is a BLACK woman. She is an AFRICAN… STFU retard!

  • Alanina

I agree with @LadyElle, Kimberly Elise should be on this list. She was also phenomenal in “For Colored Girls”. She should have won an Academy Award for that! #justsaying

  • 80′s girl

Also, I am tired of seeing these “singers” (who cannot act) snatch up roles from these seasoned, talented actresses.

  • 80′s girl

Tichina Arnold…..seriously? The only thing she is good for is being loud, ghetto and boisterous. I always thought she was very competitve with Tisha Campbell-Martin, even though they call themselves “best friends.”

I love Angela Bassett, Alfre Woodard, Regina King, and Anika Rose. I think they are seriously underrated.

All of these actresses are unique in their own way, but I have to give it to Angela Basset, Regina Hall, Alfre Woodard, Thadie Newton, Jurnee Smollet, and Anika Noni Rose. They just have to have the right type of roles. What I would like to see in hollywood is these more seasoned actresses working with the younger ones, and creating roles that are meaninful, and believable on the big screen. Do more period pieces, sci-fi, animations, and thrillers. There are millions of history books of stories that need to be told.

No Kimberly Elise, really???????? She is definitely one of the best IMO. Have you seen John Q? Or that episode of Girlfriends when she had HIV? She is amazing!
