If you cringe looking back at photos of yourself in college, high school, and even middle school, you probably have Kimora Lee Simmons to thank. With Baby Phat — the female equivalent of Phat Farm — Kimora ushered in the feminine street wear movement of the early 2000s and all the tacky trends that came with it. Of course at that time, you couldn’t tell us — or her — we weren’t fly with our low-rise jeans, sexy low-cut tops, oversized jackets, and heels.

Back in the day, Kimora was the epitome of Baby Phat all day every day, which made sense considering it was her brand. But as the urban wear trend died down, so did the model’s own over-the-top fashion. And while we don’t see Kimora on many red carpets anymore because she’s much too busy being a mother of four and honing another fashion line, this time simply Kimora Lee Simmons, on her 42nd birthday we thought it was a good time to pay homage to the trends she set and her own personal fashion evolution. Here’s a look back at Kimora’s Baby Phat days as well as her better days on and off the red carpet.
