Thanks For The Memories: The Best “106 & Park” Moments
After enjoying 14 years on air, BET has announced that its show “106 & Park” will no longer be on our television screens. Instead, the long-running show will switch over to a digital format and its last episode will air on December 19th. In honor of its long run, we take a look back at some of the more memorable moments from the show.
Karrueche Tran’s guest appearance as a co-host on “106 & Park” was memorable but not for the right reason. Chris Brown’s boo ended up on the receiving end of a Beyhive attack when she read a not so nice jab about Blue Ivy’s hair from a teleprompter live on air. Tran apologized immediately after reading the distasteful joke and again expressed her remorse on twitter but that wasn’t enough for Beyonce’s fans. BET released a statement apologizing for the joke and the producer responsible received the axe.
Chris Brown Performs “Run It”
Chris Brown has always been an amazing artist who puts his all in her performances. But back in 2006, a young Breezy took to the stage at “106 & Park” and first showed the world his killer dance moves. It was his first time on the show and he performed his debut single “Run It.” Needless to say we were watching the makings of a star.
August Alsina Shades The Host
Rappers are known to beef with each other but in the case of August Alsina and Trey Songz, it was two R&B singers that couldn’t get along. The “I Luv This” singer made an appearance to plug his new album and although the hosts were told ahead of time not to ask Alsina about the alleged bad blood between him and Trigga, Keyshia Chante did so anyway and his response was classic when he looked at her and said, “So, you’re just going to go against the grain, huh?”
Michelle Williams Falls
Falls happen to some of the best performers, but for Michelle Williams it happened while she was on “106 & Park.” Who could ever forget when Destiny’s Child performed on the show and Michelle ended up on the floor while Beyonce and Kelly Rowland didn’t miss the beat and continued on? No matter what she’s done since then, Michelle will forever be remembered for kissing the floor on “106 & Park.”
Rocsi Walks Off
What would you do if your co-host made fun of you live on air and repeatedly pointed out the mistakes you were making? Well, it happened to Rocsi and after hearing enough of Terrence J chiding her, she walked off. At one point he even turned to her and said, “Why can’t you have a body like Ciara?” After she stormed off, Terrence and Rocsi hosted the show separately with different celebrity co-hosts for weeks until singer Mario read an apology note that Terrence wrote for forgiveness.
Terrence J Proposes To Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson has been the object of many teenaged boys’ and young men’s fantasy. Probably one of the best days of Terrence J’s life was when Janet Jackson made an appearance on “106 & Park.” He had a chance to fulfill his childhood fantasy by presenting a candy ring pop to Jackson and asking for her hand in marriage. She really made his day when she fed him fresh strawberries live on air.
Kanye West Gets On Free’s Nerves
Kanye West has always had a chip on his shoulder and it was evident way back in the day when he appeared on “106 & Park.” The Chicago rapper appeared on the show to talk about his “Jesus Walks” video and in true Yeezy fashion, he goes on and on and on. Notice how annoyed Free looks, especially when he checks her about asking him what his favorite cartoon was.
Lil Kim Blasts Rocsi
We all know there’s no love lost between Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj. Their beef has been well chronicled and during a 2012 appearance on the show Rocsi tried to get the Queen Bee to open up about her thoughts on Minaj. But the Brooklyn rapper was sick and tired of talking about their ongoing beef and chided the “106 & Park” co-host for being disrespectful in her questioning.
Terrence J Gives Webbie The Boot
Terrence J may have had her differences with co-host Rocsi but he’s the only one who could mess with her. Webbie appeared on the show as part of Freestyle Friday but something happened during a commercial break because when they came back on air, the Louisiana rapper was nowhere to be found. Terrence J announced that Webbie was banned from the show while Rocsi tweeted about never letting a man talk to her in a disrespectful manner. A few weeks later, Webbie made a couple threats aimed at Terrence J.
Bow Wow Plants One On Tyra Banks
How many guys can say they shared a kiss with supermodel Tyra Banks? Thanks to his job as co-host on the countdown show, Shad Moss can say he’s one of them. The artist formerly known as Bow Wow planted one on the long-legged supermodel in front of the cheering audience. But it wasn’t the first time these two kissed. Several months earlier on her own talk show, Banks and Moss puckered up for the cameras.
Lil Wayne Kisses Birdman
We’ve all heard the rumors that Lil Wayne and Birdman have kissed before but when Cash Money appeared on “106 & Park,” we saw it for our own eyes. Back in the day, Birdman appeared on the show alongside Weezy and Mannie Fresh and Free asked the Cash Money honcho about kissing girls. But before she could get the entire question out, Lil Wayne interrupted. Weezy declared that he was the only one who kissed Birdman before planting one on him.
Aaliyah’s Last Interview
We lost an amazing singer and a promising actress when Aaliyah perished in a private plane crash while leaving the Bahamas back in 2001. She flew to the beautiful island to shoot the “Rock The Boat” music video but just four days before she boarded the doomed flight, Aaliyah made what turned out to be her final appearance on the “106 & Park.”
Jin On Freestyle Friday
Battle rap has always been a very popular element of hip-hop and Freestyle Fridays became a staple on “106 & Park.” Early on in the show’s run, battle rapper Jin started walking away with the crown. Many viewers tuned in each week just to see Jin annihilate his competitor and each week he was declared the victor.
Michael Jackson Dies
On June 25th, 2009 the world was shocked to learn of Michael Jackson’s untimely death. Many people remembered exactly where they were the moment they found out the news and for Terrence J and Rocsi, they were at work on the air. The co-hosts were understandably shell shocked and at a loss for words reporting the “Black & White” singer’s death.
First Lady Michelle Obama Stops By
First Lady Michelle Obama graced the set of “106 & Park” last year. She stopped by and during her appearance she spoke about the importance of education. The First Lady opened up about how education played a pivotal role in her life. She also touted President Obama’s pledge for the U.S. to become number one nation as far as the highest proportion of college graduates. Mrs. Obama revealed some of her favorite pastimes as a teenager but her appearance solidified her status as the nation’s coolest FLOTUS.
