Indiana Murder Suspect Leads Police Officers To Six Other Dead Women He May Have Killed
The bodies of seven women were found scattered throughout northwest Indiana after a man in police custody confessed to at least three of their murders and told officers where three of their corpses could be found, NBC Chicago reports. Officers first began investigating Darren Deon Vann, 43, after a madam sent him 19-year-old Afrika Hardy to a Motel 6 in Hammond for a sexual encounter. When Hardy didn’t return, the woman contacted police.
At the motel, officers discovered Hardy’s body. As it turns out, she was strangled to death. Using the number that Vann provided to the madam at the time of the transaction, officers were able to execute a search warrant on the home. Vann confessed to the crime immediately.
“During his initial arrest in the city of Gary, Mr. Vann told Hammond police officers at the scene that he had ‘messed up’ by committing the crime in Hammond and was surprised at how quickly he was located after the incident,” said Hammond Police Chief John Doughty.
While being questioned, Vann also offered information about six other dead women and confessed to killing at least three of them.
“He was looking for some type of deal with the prosecutors,” Doughty added.
Their bodies were later located throughout Gary. Three of the women were identified earlier today as Anith Jones,35, 28-year-old Teairra Batey, and 36-year-old Christine Williams. Officers found Jones’ remains at approximately 11:20 p.m. on Saturday evening in an abandoned home. The bodies of Batey and Williams were found in abandoned homes as well.
As for the bodies of the other three women, investigators are still working on having them identified. In addition to the seven women whose bodies were found by investigators, Vann “admitted to a couple of homicides in Hammond,” which date back to 20 years ago. Investigators say that more bodies may be discovered in the coming days. Gary Police have been working on keeping residents calm in the wake of the grisly discoveries.
“We would like to dispel the rumor that there is a serial killer on the loose. There is a 43-year-old man in the custody of The Hammond Police Department, who led officials to 3 deceased female victims who has claimed responsibility for their demise. Gary Police are closely working with Hammond Police to assist in covering every area of the investigation needed to pursue charges as expeditiously as possible,” said Gary Cpl. Gabrielle King.
Vann is expected to be formally charged sometime today. So far, Vann will only be charged for the murder of Africka. He is still being investigated for the other six.
