WNBA Star Brittney Griner Gets Engaged
With so much sad news, it’s refreshing to report that black love is alive and real. WNBA stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson recently got engaged according to the NYPost. The Phoenix Mercury’s Griner got on bended knee according to pictures she shared with her Instagram followers and proposed to her longtime love who plays for the Tulsa Shock. She shared:
“Last Night was a Night to Remember (,) I became the happiest person on this earth! (almost pass out but when that one word came out I came back to life) Me and my baby @missvol25 are in it for Life!”
Johnson also took to her Instagram to express her happiness:
“What I get to wake up to @brittneygriner #LoveMakesYouDoTheCraziestThings.”
Griner has spoken openly about her sexuality in the past and her struggle to be accepted by both her peers and adults in her youth. She has since embraced her role as a prominent gay athlete. Griner officially came out last year and wrote a candid memoir about her former college coach, Kim Mulkey who discouraged her from coming out for some time. Mulkey was questioned after Griner said that Mulkey told her to keep her sexuality quiet to not draw any negative PR towards the school. Griner went on to say that she hopes to rebuild her relationship with Mulkey and that she was “not alone” as a gay athlete at Baylor University.
The 6-foot-8 center, drafted first overall by Phoenix last year, has helped trememdously in leading the Mercury to a WNBA-best 27-5 record. She is averaging 15.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.9 blocks.
Johnson is averaging 15.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in her third season with Tulsa. The 6-foot-3 forward played at Tennessee.
We wish the two all of our best!
