Man Kills Himself After Shooting Son And Girlfriend At Birthday Party
Grieving relatives can’t figure out what possessed Tyrell Styles to shoot his longtime girlfriend, Shyema Washington and then turn the gun on his 5-year-old son, Cion Styles.
According to the Philadelphia Daily News, 26-year-old Shyema came stumbling into her 3-year-old nieces birthday celebration with blood pouring from her mouth. She had been struck in her mouth, midsection and buttocks. The certified nursing assistant maintained consciousness long enough to tell investigators that her longtime boyfriend and father of her son, Tyrell Styles, is the one who shot her. After shooting Shyema, investigators say that Tyrell then turned the gun on their 5-year-old son, Cion Styles, striking him in the forehead. The boy was also shot in the ankle. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Sadly, Shyema, who was in critical condition at the Crozer-Chester Medical Center, has not yet been made aware that her son didn’t make it.
“She wanted her son,” said Shyema’s sister, Daneesha Hill. “She just kept asking me about him.”
“I don’t want to be the one to do it,” Daneesha continued. “Me being a mom, I just couldn’t imagine.”
“She does not know what happened to her son as of yet,” added Ridley Township Police Lt. Scott Willoughby. “He [Cion] went to his cousin’s birthday party and he ended up with two gunshot wounds. He ended up dead.”
Once authorities arrived on the scene, investigators say Tyrell took off in a white vehicle. The chase ended on a dead end street. Officers say he then pulled out his handgun and shot himself in the head.
“As they exited their patrol cars, they heard a single gunshot from the vehicle,” said Lt. Willoughby.
The disturbed father was declared brain dead and placed on life support at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was later removed from life support. Daneesha revealed to reporters that Tyrell had recently broken up with Shyema. On the day of the shooting, he dropped off little Cion to the birthday party. Bizarrely, Daneesha says she didn’t hear the estranged couple arguing before the shooting.
“It just seems like a nightmare. That’s my little sister. That was my nephew. She’s in critical condition. He’s gone.”
Although the young parents had gotten into a physical altercation in the past, Daneesha says she doesn’t recall Tyrell being a violent person.
“The stories she told me didn’t match up with what I saw. He had two personalities,” Daneesha continued. “He was a little guy. I don’t think she thought he was a threat.”
We send our prayers to this family as they cope with this gruesome tragedy.
