Mixing business with pleasure can be pretty challenging, but husband-and-wife duo, Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil appear to have a great thing going. While Mara admits that not every day is a walk in the park, the “Being Mary Jane” creator says that respect is a crucial part of the working relationship she has with her husband.
“There are always those moments, we’re artists,” Mara recently told The Jasmine Brand. “But we’ve found a really wonderful formula. It’s based in respect. I really respect him as a director and visionary and he respects my vision of creation.”
In addition to mutual respect being the oil that keeps their machine running, Mara also credits the fact that they simply work well together.
“We’re a great peanut butter cup—the chocolate and peanut butter goes really well together. Out of respect for what the other does, we’re champions for each other.”
Another important aspect of being part of a husband-and-wife team is having defined roles.
“Like when he was directing ‘Sparkle,'” Mara explained. “I made it clear it was his vision I was serving. When it comes to ‘Being Mary Jane,’ he’s very clear that it’s my vision that he’s serving. We are very clear at the onset of every production who gets the last word and that’s based upon whose vision that it is. Once you decide that, any debatable problems go away. I really believe in him as an artist. He’s my best friend, my fellow artist, he’s my husband. Sometimes working together is the only time I get to see him. Except now, he’s away a lot but the unit is figuring that out.”
They do make a really amazing team.
