Gary Owen Responds To ESSENCE Magazine ‘Snub’
Earlier this month, we told you that fans weren’t too happy to learn that Gary Owen and Jerry Ferrara were excluded from ESSENCE magazine’s recent feature celebrating the cast of “Think Like A Man Too.” Gary recently opened up about the exclusion and according to the comedian and actor, he didn’t really take the exclusion too personally.
“You know what, I didn’t even think nothing of it, until it got brought to my attention,” Gary recently told The Jasmine Brand. “It’s very rare that all of us guys have been included in everything like whether it’s an interview or a magazine.”
He then went on to point out that around the time of the last “Think Like A Man” release, ESSENCE only featured Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Hart and Michael Ealy.
“Like, the last movie was Micheal, Taraji and Kevin and that wasn’t a big deal, it just happened that they wanted 5 guys, and that’s the 5 they chose. I was fine with it because magazines know their readers better than I do. I didn’t look at it like a racial thing. I just looked at it like, ‘Okay, that’s who caters to their readers’. And I was happy that Will Packer got some shine because he’s the producer and some people were like ‘Why did Will Packer get on and not you or Jerry?’. Will Packer is the reason why all of this is happening so, for him to get a little shine, I’m all for it.”
Gary did, however, point out that while he doesn’t feel that the exclusion had anything to do with race, he feels that the outrage that his exclusion sparked speaks to how we’re progressing as a society.
“I got taken back. It was kind of okay because it shows that as a society, we are progressing. That people would notice and people of color would notice something like that. It’s not like, a lot people think it’s one sided and t’s really not.”
What are your thoughts on Gary’s response?
