Angelina Jolie has become a household name and literally shatters box offices once a film debuts with her name attached to it. But as of late, the famed actress is receiving mixed reviews about her upcoming role as Egyptian Queen Cleopatra. According to Rolling Out, it will be the second time Jolie performs a role where the character’s race is black. The first time she portrayed a black woman was in the film A Mighty Heart which covered the life of Glamour Magazine journalist, Mariane Pearl.

Although there have been numerous debates over the race of Cleopatra, studies have proven Cleopatra’s relatives were of sub-Saharan African descent on her matrilineal side. Also Cleopatra was born in Egypt which would make her African, regardless of her physical appearance. Despite these facts, the film industry and media has repeatedly  portrayed Cleopatra as a white woman and this time Black Twitter wasn’t having it, responding to the news of Jolie as Cleopatra as such:

While Black Twitter rages about Jolie’s new role, her fan base will be grabbing the nearest boxes of Klennex. During an interview with Edith Bowman of  BBC radio, Jolie said she may retire after the Cleopatra film debuts.

“It’s one of those that you feel like well, maybe that’s the one you put everything into and that’s where you end it, that’s where you finish. In a great way, what could you do beyond that one?”

She also noted the script of the movie was written by her friend, screenwriter Eric Roth, which may (somewhat) explain why she was chosen for the lead. As for how she’ll manage to play an African Queen, Jolie said:

“She’s complicated. It’s complicated to get this one right. But I think we’re getting there. It’s close, but I imagine the preparation for it is going to be big.”

Allegedly, the Cleopatra film will be featured in 3D though it has yet to be confirmed when it will debut in theaters.

Do you think Jolie can pull of this “role of a lifetime”?
