Halle Berry has been all up in the news as of late, with custody battles, a new boyfriend and her recent Ebony interview, Berry is getting plenty of publicity.
In the March 2011 issue of Ebony, Berry told the magazine she had not abandoned black people and that she was still very connected to her community. She said the race of her daughter’s father and the race of her latest boyfriend doesn’t detract from either her or her daughter’s racial identity. Berry told Ebony, in a quote that’s since raised some eyebrows, that her daughter will eventually have to choose her identity for herself but she feels she’s black.
“I feel she’s black. I’m black and I’m her mother, and I believe in the one-drop theory.”
A writer over a Black Voices, wonders why Berry has to rationalize her decision to date outside of her race, when other prominent black actors and artists have never felt the need to do so. She concluded that Berry’s assertion of not having abandoned her community was a ploy to get the black community to support her latest film. You can read the entire article here.
How do you feel about the one- drop theory and do you think Berry is just trying to get black folk to see her movie?
