Tavis Smiley To Get Star On Hollywood Walk Of Fame
Tavis Smiley’s not on everyone’s favorite media personality list — count President Obama among his probable detractors. He has been an outspoken critic of President Obama, often butting heads with the White House. Nevertheless, Smiley will be getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today. And it will be in a prime location– near the famous corner of Hollywood and Vine.
“Tavis Smiley is an inspiration to our generation and future leaders. He continues to deliver entertainment, advocacy and politics with his honest conversations,” said Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “His fans will be glad to see Tavis join our Walk of Fame family.”
And Smiley has some heavyweights lined up to help him celebrate. Guest speakers will include former CNN show host Larry King and Jay Leno. Smiley will be getting the 2,522nd star in the category of Television at 6270 Hollywood Boulevard. The ceremony will be streamed live on WalkOfFame.com.
Before venturing into broadcasting, Mississippi-born Smiley was in politics, serving under Mayor Tom Bradley in L.A.
Smiley is currently the host of the late-night television talk show Tavis Smiley on PBS, as well as The Tavis Smiley Show from Public Radio International (PRI).
Smiley has also written a whopping 16 books. And his memoir, What I Know for Sure: My Story of Growing Up in America, was a New York Times best seller. He has another book coming–Death of a King: The Real Story of the Last Year in the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be published in September.
