PETA Pressed Over First Lady’s Annual Easter Egg Roll
PETA is targeting Michelle Obama in a new campaign where the animal rights organization calls for big changes to the First Lady’s Annual Easter Egg Roll.
In the video entitled “Michelle Obama, We Need To Talk”, PETA expresses that the use of real eggs in the event is unacceptable. The one-minute ad features little girls stating that they’re not mad at the FLOTUS just “disappointed”. They don’t exactly blame the FLOTUS for the practice, but encourage her to be a leader for change in the White House tradition. “Be the leader we know you can be. You’re better than this!” the adolescent activists say. “If all the other first ladies jumped off a bridge, would you?”
The girls urge Chelly-O to begin to use to plastic eggs which can be re-used and recycled, unlike the 7000 real eggs that are wasted each year taken from chickens who spend their whole lives in cages.
Although PETA is known for being a little extreme, President Ingrid Newkirk makes an interesting point in a letter addressed directly to the First Lady where she states the use of real eggs goes against the FLOTUS’s healthy eating initiative.
“Encouraging the consumption of cruelly sourced, unhealthy eggs is inconsistent with the goals of the “Let’s Move!” initiative. Eggs are laden with saturated animal fat and cholesterol, which are primary contributors to some of our nation’s top killers, including heart disease and strokes.”
In the First Lady’s defense, we don’t think she’s encouraging kids to eat the eggs, just roll them. Also, one could argue that eggs which can be eaten and are bio-degradable are safer for the environment than plastic eggs which would more than likely sit in a landfill for years when thrown away.
This year’s event will take place on Monday, April 21st with the theme, “Hop Into Healthy, Swing Into Shape”. More than 30,000 people will assemble on the White House lawn to partake in the 136th celebration which will feature live music, storytelling and Easter egg rolling.
Do you think PETA is just catching feelings or does the Annual Easter Egg Roll need some eco-friendly updating? We must admit these kids are crazy cute though. Check out “Michelle Obama, We Need To Talk!” below:
