Oooooh! Bieber Touched Esperanza Spalding’s Hair!

February 16th, 2011 - By Demetria Irwin

The extraordinarily beautiful Esperanza Spalding has been catching a lot of heat from all those little girls (and grown folks!) with Bieber fever because she snagged the Best New Artist Grammy over the teen crooner. Well, the Biebster might have to face the wrath of the Big Hair Don’t Care Club! Little man did the ultimate no-no…touched Esperanza’s hair during an interview!

Check out what The Grio says about it:

As if enduring death threats from angry hormonal tweens weren’t enough, Grammy Award winner Esperanza Spalding had to incur another act of violence via Justin Bieber — he touched her hair.

The two sat down with the Associated Press after Spalding’s surprising Best New Artist win. The jazz musician showed the depth of her patience and character by bearing an interview with Bieber in the first place — since when does the loser get more camera time than the person who walked away with the award? But the awkward moment escalates to absolute cringe-worthy when the interviewer asks the pair “how do you feel about each other?” Bieber replies “I like you hair,” patting Spalding’s ‘fro like a memory foam mattress.

Now I’m probably preaching to the choir on this one, but for the painfully uniformed and ignorant, please heed this simple PSA: DO NOT TOUCH A BLACK PERSON’S HAIR.

With permission is my issue. My mother taught me to keep my hands to myself :-) It’s just good manners. I’ve had students ask to touch my hair. No biggie, because they asked. Otherwise you are invading my personal space.

I'm black with sisterlocks and people always want to touch my hair back and white. If your hands are clean go ahead, with my permission of course. My black card is going to be revoked because no one told me the rule that as a black woman no one is allowed to touch my hair. I don't know if its meant in humor or for real but its an ignorant statement if I've ever hear one. I tip waiters and I have good credit *playing into the stereotype*. Please do more uplifting pieces and not journalistic drivel.

i might be a little ignorant but i kinda get the impression that he patted it like that because he wanted to touch it but wanted to avoid 'messing it up' like he might have done if he hadn't been careful, i don't think it comes from a bad place it seemed to me like he was trying to be careful with something he wasn't familiar with.
also i'm black but i don't mind people touching my hair , really don't get what the big deal is…

I understand he was in awe about her hair and its nice that it show his accpatance of black hair and society, but it was kind of like he was patting it like a dog. He should have asked first or something. I have a fro but when people I just met try to touch it and stuff its kind of awkward. People I know can touch it without premisson, but with other people its like." Back up. I dont know you like that. Personal space much."

As a black professional from the south originally where showing your natural hair was frowned upon when I was growing up I think it is wonderful when others can see and appreciate the beauty of our natural hair. And, lets face it. It is the younger generation that makes the true changes. The media often shapes the way young people feel about themselves reguardless of color. So, I hope all those young african american young ladies who love Justin, and there are many, will get a chance to see him compliment the beauty of true afro textured hair.

He's a white kid. White, so he doesn't know the intricacies and 'rules' regarding black women and their hair. (Is she black?) And kid, because he's a child that was paying Esperanza a compliment. She has an incredible bush of hair that captivated him. I admit to wincing when he touched it, but it was innocent. Sometimes, we go a little overboard with our personal sensitivities and operate with the expectation that everyone else already knows…
