No Money, Mo’ Problems: Terrell Owens Slapped With $244K Tax Lien
It looks like former NFL star Terrell Owens is facing more financial hardship. According to TMZ, the athlete-turned-reality-star has been hit with a hefty tax bill to the tune of $244,000.
Court documents reveal that Owens owes $244,391.52 for unpaid income taxes from 2012. This of course, isn’t the first time the troubled ex-athlete has found himself in trouble with Uncle Sam. Between the years of 2005 and 2009, he reportedly racked up $430,000 in back taxes. He just finished up paying that lien off back in 2013.
It’s unfortunate that after playing 15 seasons and earning over $80 million, Owens has almost nothing to show for it. He credits his financial plight to his poor judgement when it comes to trusting people.
“It’s not a matter of having lived too large—he was never the type to stockpile Ferraris or build himself a compound; the flashiest car he ever drove was a Mercedes, and while he indeed racked up a few homes that cost as much as $4 million, the only crib he classifies as even mildly sick by pro-ball standards was the one he bought in Atlanta to live in during the Philly off-season,” a 2012 GQ profile on Owens reads.
The problem, he says, is that he’s by nature too trusting, loyal to a fault, despite everyone’s carping that he’s selfish. It’s the sad old stereotypical song of the up-from-nothing black athlete: He let other people take care of things. He says his financial advisers (informally recommended by Rosenhaus) put him in a series of risky, highly leveraged ventures that he didn’t discover until autumn 2010, when he finally demanded a full accounting.”
So far, reps on behalf of Owens have yet to comment on the lien.
