Spare Some Change? Charles Barkley Calls Michael Jordan A Cheapskate

April 5, 2014  |

Charles Barkley let late-night television host Conan O’Brien in on a little secret when he appeared on his show last night. Apparently in addition to being kind of a big deal in basketball, his BFF Michael Jordan in also majorly stingy and even slaps Barkley’s hand when he goes to give money to homeless people.

“There’s nobody cheaper than Scotty Pippen and Michael Jordan—he’s cheap.”

“I always give homeless people money and [MJ will] always slap my hand and says, ‘If they can ask you for spare change they can say ‘Welcome to McDonalds, can I help you please?”

Barkley however says he is a huge tipper and believes the more successful someone is, the more of an obligation that have to tip generously. Even he has left a $25,000 tip in the past.

A Forbes article posted last year revealed that Jordan continues to make $80 million a year even without being an actively playing athlete. His earnings include corporate partnerships with Nike, Gatorade, Hanes, Upper Deck, 2K Sports, Presbyterian Healthcare and Five Star Fragrances. His other assets include six restaurants, a North Carolina car dealership, a motorsports team and his 80% stake in the Charlotte Bobcats. Jordan out-earns almost every member of the world’s highest-paid athletes 10 years after his last NBA game, and let’s not forget the Jordan brand that is repeatedly the highest priority of teens and some grown men and women across the country. The U.S. Jordan Brand sneaker business alone had $1.25 billion in wholesale revenue in 2012.

All that and you can’t spare $5 for a hot meal?  Peep Barkley diming out his pal and other tightwad athletes in the clip below:

All homeless people do not deserve help, some are like the serpent..”you knew I was a serpent when you picked me up (after he bit them). And for Michael’s information, McDonald’s does not hire just anybody, more than likely it would be hard as hell for a homeless person to get a job at McDonalds. The advice of “if you give a man a fish, he will eat for the day, teach him to fish, he will eat for life” is still true today.

MJ has a point, instead of begging you should go work. How is that fair that others have to work for money but some ppl feel like they’ll just sit and beg for the money others worked for.

As much as I dislike Charles Barkley, I have to agree with him. I used to work at a casino boat near Chicago that MJ and Pippen used to frequent. MJ was a very cheap tipper and Pippin didn’t tip at all. His nickname was ‘No tippin’ Pippen!

Minus the stinginess, michael’s the man. $1.25bill off of sneakers?! I only give change to the homeless when they are genuinely hungry. If they’re swigging a beer can i just keep it moving.

Well, we’ve known for a long time that MJ is a penny-pincher.
I no longer give money directly to homeless people because it has ticked me off when I saw the same people dutifully begging everyday, like a job. One time, a person I’d given money to had the nerve to accept it without saying “thank you”. When I said something about that, she just turned away and acted like she didn’t hear me….the last $3 in my wallet. Never again.

But, I do tip between 15 – 20% when I go out to eat. Tipping is part of the meal, so if someone can’t or doesn’t want to tip, he/she should stay home and prepare their own food.

I feel you. I once offered to buy a panhandler a meal and he turned me down…only wanted cold cash. Also gave one a dollar, only to have him ask me for two…with no thank you of course. LOL.

Same here. I was approached by a guy in front of a McDonalds in Chicago for “change to get something to eat”. Told him I’d be right out. I returned with two breakfast sandwiches and a large OJ. Not only did he not offer thanks, he reacted angrily and threw the food in the trash. I later learned that he was pissed b/c i didn’t give him what he really asked for: “Change”! Obviously his gut was full and the $$$ was for something else. I was on business in another city (west coast) and learned that some of the pandhandlers actually have permits to “handle” certain corners – like a “place of business”. SMH!!
As for tipping, I usually start at 20% and increase/decrease depending on service.

Well Charles, that’s why MJ will not be the one filing for bankruptcy and all that other foolishness that black celebrities get into.

Because he won’t spare change to the homeless? I’m sure he’s wasted much more or petty things.

      • Gert

Yeah like on young blonde girls, gambling and cuban cigars, lol!

I agree, I always thought MJ was an arrogant butt hole. I’m glad my kids are not into his shoes, etc.
