Spare Some Change? Charles Barkley Calls Michael Jordan A Cheapskate
Charles Barkley let late-night television host Conan O’Brien in on a little secret when he appeared on his show last night. Apparently in addition to being kind of a big deal in basketball, his BFF Michael Jordan in also majorly stingy and even slaps Barkley’s hand when he goes to give money to homeless people.
“There’s nobody cheaper than Scotty Pippen and Michael Jordan—he’s cheap.”
“I always give homeless people money and [MJ will] always slap my hand and says, ‘If they can ask you for spare change they can say ‘Welcome to McDonalds, can I help you please?”
Barkley however says he is a huge tipper and believes the more successful someone is, the more of an obligation that have to tip generously. Even he has left a $25,000 tip in the past.
A Forbes article posted last year revealed that Jordan continues to make $80 million a year even without being an actively playing athlete. His earnings include corporate partnerships with Nike, Gatorade, Hanes, Upper Deck, 2K Sports, Presbyterian Healthcare and Five Star Fragrances. His other assets include six restaurants, a North Carolina car dealership, a motorsports team and his 80% stake in the Charlotte Bobcats. Jordan out-earns almost every member of the world’s highest-paid athletes 10 years after his last NBA game, and let’s not forget the Jordan brand that is repeatedly the highest priority of teens and some grown men and women across the country. The U.S. Jordan Brand sneaker business alone had $1.25 billion in wholesale revenue in 2012.
