How to Enjoy Being a “Struggling Artist” Before Your Big Break

February 16th, 2011 - By Grace N. Edwards

Surround Yourself With Supportive People

In the words of Ms. Jill Scott: “Hate on me haters/ Now or later/ Cause I’m gonna be me.” There will always be people who think you’re crazy, stupid or naive for following your dreams. Your doubters may not always have bad intentions. Some folks genuinely care about you and will discourage your ambitions because they hate seeing you struggle. However, if you’re determined to be an artist, you need people around you who think you’re courageous, not foolish. You need friends or family who believe in you and will encourage you when times get tough.

Thanks for such a great article! I need the "nudge" every once in a while….the reminder of why I do what I do. This article reminded me of some things I need to do (and continue doing) to pursue my passion.

I think the mentor thing is a great idea. Where can I find a mentor store?
