I’m sure some hospitals are understanding in times of crisis and may not make as big of a deal out of whether you’re the wife or the fiancé if your partner is fighting for his life in an emergency room, but many hospital policies state that unmarried partners are usually not considered next of kin for the purposes of hospital visitation and emergency medical decisions. In addition, they aren’t eligible for Medicare and Medicaid coverage.
