6. Family medical leave and employment.
Many jobs are flexible and can accommodate individual situations if they value you as an employee. But legally, an employer doesn’t have to guarantee you sick leave or maternity/paternity leave for someone who is not your spouse. This means that if you have a child or if that child has a terminal illness that requires a lengthy stay in a hospital, your partner can stay by your side but may not have a job waiting for them when they return, and it’s perfectly legal.
