It’s been a bit of a rocky road getting there, but Erica Campbell’s first solo project, “Help” is finally complete! The big sister of the Gospel duo sensation Mary Mary announced last year that she would be pursuing a solo career, and of course that announcement came with as much backlash as it did excitement. From controversy over her apparel to concerns about what this move might mean for the future of Mary Mary, it’s safe to say Erica and Tina have been hit with it all when it comes to this venture — and we imagine that’s what makes the album’s title “Help” and first single of the same name all the more significant.
When the sisters came into the office last month to talk about the next season of their WeTV show and the album, Erica told us:
“I’m very proud of my record ‘Help’ because it represents my 2013, which was almost a devastating year for me. Everything was up and down and all over the place and at the same time I was grateful to be doing something new — something new that required new, fresh, exciting fun energy and there wasn’t much fun in my life, so I was able to pull from that. It’s not a sad record, it’s a fighter, kind of resilient record that lets you know that nothing will keep you down forever and I often say the best part of the whole process was having Tina there to support me 100 percent.”
