Another Oscar Nomination? Mo’Nique Talks New Film “Blackbird” Plus Trailer Sneak Peek

March 18, 2014  |

In 2009, we saw a grim side to Mo’Nique in the Lee Daniel’s film, Precious with Gabourey Sidibe. Mo’Nique’s role earned her an Academy Award, and if you ever needed a refresher as to why she won the Oscar, her new film Blackbird will completely remind you. Rolling Out Magazine reported Mo’Nique will play a devout Christian mother whose teenage son  struggles with his sexuality. During her Rolling Out interview, Mo’Nique revealed why Blackbird’s script resonated with her and her husband/business partner, Sheldon Hicks. Of the director, Patrick Ian Polk, and cast, Mo’Nique said:

[He’s] a brilliant director. I’ve never thought I’d get the opportunity with such a fearless director as Lee Daniels or a fearless actor like Gabourey Sidibe again and to work with Patrick [he] was just fearless and wasn’t willing to waiver from the story he needed to tell.  Julian Walker was fearless and wasn’t willing to waiver for fear of being ridiculed for playing that role. To work with them; it was an honor.

To see Mo’Nique’s point, watch the trailer of Blackbird below, with Isaiah Washington and newcomer, Julian Walker.

    this movie looks good!

Good for her. However, the roles that she has garnered the most attention from arent really a big stretch for her to play. A really mean black lady in Precious, and in this movie, a black lady who fears the wrath of God and doesnt want her son to be gay. She can plays these roles all day.

hm….What roles do you suggest she play?

      • bee

        Right! Please tell us.

      • hi-liter

A role other than the ones she has been playing.

Since we dont know her personally. How do you know it’s a stretch and not her ability?

      • hi-liter

I said the roles she has been playing are not a big stretch from who she is. I didnt say anything about her ability to act.

…who she is as a black woman? She can’t be anything else

How do you know “the roles she has been playing are not a big stretch from who she is”?
Do you know her personally? Is she an abusive, incestuous, mentally ill mother? That’s who she played in the movie “Precious”, and in this film we see her for 15 seconds, so we don’t know the depth of this character. Being a black women is the only thing that makes it easy for her to play, but like most black women our lives and characters are multiple and there are no common personalities to play. I disagree, she is extraordinary in the roles she chooses and I look forward to seeing her in this role…Go Monique!

I disagree…as far a her role in precious she acted her azz off…that character was disgusting & that took skill…just being a big black mean lady is not enough to depict that level of evil
