Isaiah Washington Returning To ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ 7 Years After Getting Fired
Isaiah Washington didn’t leave the set of “Grey’s Anatomy” on good terms seven years ago, but apparently the 50-year-old actor and Grey’s producers were able to make amends for the sake of a killer storyline.
If you recall, it was reported that Isaiah was fired from the show in 2007 after he couldn’t get along with co-star T.R. Knight. Isaiah and T.R.’s feud reportedly came to a head after Isaiah referred to T.R. as a “fa**ot” during an on-set argument with Patrick Dempsey. He reportedly used the slur again in the press room at the Golden Globes. Months later, he was let go over the dispute.
Isaiah will be returning for one episode where his character will be bidding his on-screen love interest, Dr. Cristina Yang, farewell—something that executive producer Shonda Rhimes says was important to the story.
“It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should,” Shonda told The Hollywood Reporter. “Burke is vital to that journey – he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”
GLAAD is in favor of Isaiah’s return to the series and recently issued a statement praising him for the work he’s done for the LGBT community in recent years.
“His PSA and his statements promoting marriage equality in recent years have sent a strong message of support for LGBT people,” GLAAD reps said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing him return to one of our favorite shows, as well as in Patrik-Ian Polk’s moving film Blackbird about a young man coming out in a small Southern town.”
