Fantasia Barrino to Play Mahalia Jackson in Biopic

February 9th, 2011 - By Veronica Wells

The third season American Idol winner is set to portray gospel legend Mahalia Jackson in her upcoming biopic. The film is based on the 1993 book Got to Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel.

Jackson, with her powerhouse voice, overcame impoverished beginnings as a girl growing up in New Orleans. At the height of her career Mahalia was a global sensation and civil rights activist. Jackson died in 1972 at 60 years old and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

The movie is set to be released in December.

Do you think Fantasia can do Mahalia justice?

I am totally appalled at thus choice.
    1) The girl CANNOT act!
    2) Ms. Jackson is rolling over in her grave at the thought of such a totally immoral hypocrite playing her.
Why not Kelly Price or Jill Scott or any scores of unknowns raised in the black church choir traditions with acting ability?

Im thinking either Kelly Price or Jennifer Hudson could play Ms. Mahalia Jackson, these women including Fantasia r the only ones with that vocal range.

I wish Fantasia well in this Mahalia Jackson biopic. She barely played herself well in her own biopic so it can only go up from here. Right?
