Let It Come Naturally: Having Faith & Finding Your Happiness
Welcome to our new column, Reset. Written by Karen Taylor Bass, this column, published each Tuesday, is about life lessons learned and mastered mentally, spiritually, and physically and how they contribute to a successful life and career.
As we get older, life happens. The dream job may not be too dreamy after all. The once burning love you shared with your partner has fizzled a bit. The body is weary from the wear and tear of living. As a result, thoughts can be less than positive. When you feel like you’ve done all you can to bring about change and nothing is working – simply surrender to get happy.
Life is a cycle. Just like your debt is forgiven every seven years, a new season is created for you to plant seeds, blossom, and yield harvest every seven years. In 2006, I resigned from my post as Jill Scott’s media strategist while at the top of my game (after serving seven years), got pregnant, lost a major contract and that was just the beginning of a domino effect of “stuff.” Every time I took a giant step toward hope, there were six steps back of despair waiting for me. I simply got tired of fighting with the universe and surrendered.
Surrendering allows one to purge, walk in faith, trust, and master the lessons to get through the journey. If you are going through something right now – surrender. Yes. Surrender to a higher power, let someone else carry your burden – relinquish, acquiesce, and make room to get happy.
There is a great prayer book, My Daily Prayer, by the late Joyce Adejumo about surrendering. Joyce writes that when her son became paralyzed as a result of his father –driving drunk and crashing while returning him home after a weekend visitation — she almost died internally. In the book, she talks about how much hurt, pain, grief, she was carrying and got so sick that she had to surrender, turn it over to God for help. The moment she surrendered, her load became lighter, the tears dried up and passion was restored when she lobbied and worked with Mothers Against Drunk Driving in the state of Texas.
If you want to feel happy right now, take a listen to Pharrell’s, “Happy.” The lyrics, without pretension, speak to the basic feelings of being content.
Because I’m happy…
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy…
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you want to do
Sometimes that what we all need to hear. That a simple act will yield simple, but awesome, results.
RESET: Regardless of what is happening right now, realize that it will get better. Surrender to a higher power, set your intentions for a better day and accept that all will be fine. The harvest is coming.
