9 Of Toni Braxton’s Most Side-Eye Worthy Moments
Am I the only one who longs for the days when the only time we really heard from artists was when they were singing or performing? These days with the constant exposure, through reality shows and interviews with every media outlet, we’re starting to hear a bit too much from people who used to be our faves. See: The R&B Divas. And apparently our favorite singers are not who we thought they were. Enter Toni Braxton. In the past few years with the emergence of her reality show “Braxton Family Values” and now her new album with Babyface, it seems that Toni is everywhere these days. And while we’re happy she’s doing well, some of her comments over the past few years have left us giving her the side eye. In case you’ve missed any of them, check out 9 of Toni’s questionable moments.
We’re having a very Caucasian divorce
In case you missed it, this morning Toni sat down with Bethenny Frankel, and the two being divorcees, talked about how they’ve coped with the situation. Instead of just saying that she and Kerry remain friends and are being civil about it all, she said:
“We are very caucasian, very white about it… I got that means, I hate you Jodi, I hate you Jodi. That’s what it means to black people. (Baby Boy reference). Black people we kind of look and say why is that? Why don’t they hate each other?”
Oh, Toni. We’re sure race has little to no bearing on whether or not a couple divorces amicably. I promise you, and Bethenny can co-sign, there are plenty of white couples who don’t get along during this time.
It may be hard to believe she said this out loud, on national television. But you can watch Toni in action here.
Playing in the snow
Toni has said several times that during her dating excursions she’s “played in the snow.” Not literally friends, playing in the snow is her euphemism for dating a white man. Sigh. Perhaps, that wouldn’t have been so bad but her interview with Chelsea Lately went from bad to worse when she expounded. She went on to say that white skin smells different and it even feels different. Wow. It’s quite ignorant. And while Toni said that she realizes that this sounds racist, it’s not. Maybe it’s not. It’s just ignorant. Furthermore, if a white man came on tv talking about he was playing in “the mud” and black skin smelled and felt different, all hell would break loose. And rightly so.
Black people don’t hike
And then in that same interview, she explained how she and her “snowflake,” (her words, not mine), have trouble agreeing what to do on their outings. He seemed to be into nature and Toni was just not.
“I don’t do anything that involves nature and getting my hair wet. He likes hiking–black people don’t hike; kayaking, is that how you say it—that stuff too. But other than that, it’s the same.”
Baby, ask around. Black people do everything. We’re a global people with diverse hobbies. And hiking isn’t all that out of the box honestly.
I’m retiring for music
It was just last year that Toni Braxton called into the Tom Joyner Morning Show and told the world that she was retiring from music. When I heard it initially I was a sad for her. She seemed to be going through a bit of a depression. She said, “I just don’t know. Maybe I’m mad at music. I don’t know what it is. I can’t, my heart’s not in it right now.” 😦 But then five months later, she came back out saying that she and Babyface were in the studio working together. Maybe I’ve become too cynical but it all seemed like this was some type of marketing ploy to one, gauge interest and two, cause people to listen to the music when she finally put it out. I can’t really call it. And if she really was considering walking away; I’m glad she reconsidered, but it just seems a little shiesty.
That’s probably why I haven’t done a straight divorce yet.
“We told the kids, ‘Sometimes mummy and daddy need a little break.’ That’s probably why I haven’t done a straight divorce yet.”
I think that’s a good way to explain a separation to children. But when you’ve been separated for four years and you’re openly dating other men, and talking about them on television, can we agree this is more than just a break right? In fact, now that we think about it, what is with the Braxton sisters and their hesitation to get divorces? Trina? Towanda? What gives?
I didn’t take a damn financial class
I really sympathize with Toni Braxton’s bankruptcy issues, specifically the second one. I don’t know what happened the first time around but the second one, where she was going to be held responsible for the Vegas shows she had to cancel because of her Lupus, who could have prevented that? But back in 2012, Toni took a bit of responsibility for her first bankruptcy saying that she did indulge in a little overspending.
“I love dishes and house things so I kind of lost it a little bit on the house ware. That kind of stuff, the girly things that’s what I indulged in – 1,000-thread-count sheets.”
She even acknowledged that she needed to be careful.
“I have to monitor myself because I am definitely on a budget.”
But then during her recent interview with “The Breakfast Club” she said, she didn’t need any financial classes.
“I didn’t take a damn financial class. Cuz that aint gon help. It’s just life.”
Hmm… It couldn’t hurt. Perhaps she was referring to her second bankruptcy, the unavoidable one.
I’m trying to get comfortable with my inner slore.
In April, 2012, Toni explained that she was trying to be like Rihanna and tap into her inner slore. I have to give her a side eye here. And not on some slut-shaming ish. We all have an inner freak who needs to come out every now and then or everyday for some of us. But the thing is, Toni was speaking about the context of her dating life. She said, I’m trying to get comfortable with my inner Slore. The inner Slore does not just date one person, does she? I have to find out if it’s in me!”
I know you’re probably thinking, you’re still slut shaming. My issue with this is that in 2012, Toni was still married–separated–but still married. And during this time, her husband was included in the dating cycle. The two didn’t know if they were still going to work it out. They didn’t end up finalizing their divorce until July, 2013. Call me old fashioned, but I think you should either be a slore for your current husband or sign them papers and then be out here.
He doesn’t have no money
Remember the time folks were speculating that Terrence J and Toni were seeing each other? People kept asking her about it. And she went on Twitter to explain the lack of connection between the two. She was cordial the first time. And then I guess she got tired of answering the question because eventually she said,
“He’s 12. He doesn’t have no money.”
He’s young, 31, fifteen years Toni’s junior. And I understand not wanting to date a younger man in the industry. But the money thing? Low blow. Especially from someone who had their own money problems. But, that being said things have certainly been looking up for Terrence J since his 106 & Park days. With his job as a E! News correspondent, the coin is a bit more real these days. According to a cursory Google search, his net worth is $4 million dollars. Not bad.
