Watch Your Back: 11 Ways Women Can Protect Themselves

February 9, 2014  |

Move chick, get out the way.

And I mean that in the nicest way possible. Women have the tendency to get in their cars and spend time fixing their lipgloss, texting the BFF or looking for that Rihanna CD instead of just taking off.  Police officers advise that this gives an attacker a perfect opportunity to get into your passenger seat and put a gun to your head or worse.  Stop wasting time in parking lots and get yourself together while you’re inside so you can get in your car and put the pedal to the metal.

This is one of the most informative and useful articles I have seen on this site in a while. Thank you!

I took a self-defense course and want to share: On the note about pepper spray–if you have not used it on yourself, just don’t use it at all. Many criminals or attackers are familiar with the spray and unless you a. get it out and b. can get a good aim, it is not very useful. Many victims end up pepper spraying themselves because it is a spray. The particles separate in air and can get in your eyes and nose as well. Also, the best weapon (if your attacker is weaponless) is first your body and then an object that cannot be easily wrestled away from you and then used against you. Honestly, your fists, aggression, weight , and the surprise that you’re fighting back can be some of the best methods of defense.

Also, trust your instincts when you’re solo. If your body says run, hide, turn around quickly–don’t dismiss it! Follow your instincts. It is better to feel silly and be alive, then alive but in serious danger.
