Celebs Who Put Their Lovers In Their Music Videos (Sometimes More Than Once)
Being in love is always a great feeling and it’s even greater to share it with the world, like these artists who weren’t shy about having their boos star in a music video with them for all to see.
Usher and Chilli
In 2001, Chilli made a lot of women jealous after she started dating Usher. Although their relationship only lasted for two years, that was enough time for Chilli to appear in two of Usher’s videos: “U Got It Bad” and “U Don’t Have To Call.” After their relationship came to an end, many speculated the songs off of Usher’s Confessions album (which hinted of an affair and a love child) were about their relationship, but the TLC member revealed that Jermaine Dupri’s love life was really the inspiration behind it all.
John Mayer and Katy Perry
On-again, off-again couple John Mayer and Katy Perry are very much on right now. Fresh out of her divorce from British comedian Russell Brand, Perry first found love again in the arms of Mayer in the summer of 2012 and although they broke up several times, these two lovebirds just couldn’t stay away from each other. Perry confessed that the song “Legendary Lovers,” off of her latest album, was inspired by the “Paperdoll” singer and the couple just brought their duet “Who You Love” to life with a heartfelt music video. Recently rumors of a secret wedding between the two were sparked when the couple invited some of their closest friends to join them on vacation in Hawaii.
Beyonce and Jay Z
Uber celebrity couple Jay Z and Beyonce have always kept their relationship very private. Although they normally have their lips sealed when it comes to the media, they had no problems showcasing their love for each other in numerous music videos. She was the Bonnie to his Clyde in the 2002 “Bonnie & Clyde” video. And that was followed up with “Crazy In Love,” “Deja Vu,” and “Let Me Upgrade You.” A few months ago she starred in her husband’s “On The Run” video and he returned the favor with a late-night frolic on the beach for Bey’s “Drunk In Love” video.
Ciara and 50 Cent
50 Cent has always seemed like the type of rapper who is more concerned with making money and music than settling down but for a time he and R&B singer Ciara seemed to be pretty serious. Ciara, who is known for her hot and steamy videos, proudly showed off her man in the video for “Can’t Leave ‘Em Alone.” In addition to dressing up for a night out on the town, the video also featured the topless couple in a loving embrace. Although that relationship didn’t last, Ciara once again has found herself in the arms of another rapper. She is currently engaged to Atlanta artist Future and recently shared the screen with him for “Body Party.”
Nelly and Ashanti
It took years for Nelly and Ashanti to finally admit that they were dating. After coming out as a couple, Ashanti enlisted the help of the St. Louis rapper to play her man in “Good Good.” In the video, Ashanti boasted that she never had to worry about her boo straying or hanging out all night with his friends because he always came back to her and her “good good.” Unfortunately, after dating on and off for nine years, the couple called it quits for good, good.
Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown
Folks were shocked when Whitney Houston started dating R&B bad boy Bobby Brown, and although many didn’t think they would tie the knot that is exactly what they did in a fairytale wedding in 1992. That same year Brown released his third solo album, which contained the song “Something In Common” featuring his very famous wife. The newlyweds were all too happy to prove to the world that their love would stand the test of time and happily put that love on display in the video. The album was a flop and the couple divorced after a tumultuous 14-year marriage.
Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith
Will Smith has always been a proud family man. Back in 1997, he penned a song dedicated to his oldest son, Will Smith III (Trey) and the “Just The Two Of Us” video showcased the love that the father had for his son along with other famous fathers and sons, including Will Smith, Sr. A newlywed in real life, at the end of the video, Smith was also joined by his wife who was with child. In a touching still that could warm the coldest heart, the actor/rapper rested his head on Pinkett-Smith’s very pregnant stomach.
Ginuwine and Sole
It took a while for R&B singer Ginuwine to find his wife but he finally fell in love and tied the knot with rapper Sole in 2003 and he wasted no time casting his lady in his “None Of Ur Friends Business” music video. Working at a street corner bodega stocking the shelves, Ginuwine’s relationship with his love interest was on shaky ground after her friends tried to break them up. The “My Pony” singer did his best to try to convince his girl that whatever they went through, it was none of her friends’ business. While Sole was featured in the video, it was Ginuwine’s dance moves with a broom that stole the show.
Erykah Badu and Andre 3000
Erykah Badu has always been a different type of singer and she certainly attracts different types of guys. In what seemed like a match made in heaven, the “Next Lifetime” singer started dating Outkast rapper Andre 3000 and for that video, she cast him as one of her love interests. In the video, she was also romantically linked to Pete Rock and Method Man. In real life, Andre 3000 was the father of Badu’s first-born child who was born the same year her debut album Baduizm was released. Badu and Andre were together for several years before she started rapper Common.
Common and Erykah Badu
…and then he put her in a music video. Erykah Badu started dating rapper Common in 2000. The Chicago rapper tapped his real life love interest to star in his “The Light” video. Framed as a love letter, Common confesses his feelings for Badu in the video. Too bad their love wouldn’t last. The couple broke up two years later. Common has since been romantically linked to tennis great Serena Williams while Badu moved on to Cali rapper The D.O.C. before dating New Orleans emcee Jay Electronica.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian
Kanye West has been in love with reality television star Kim Kardashian for well over a decade but because the two were in relationships with other people for much of that time, he couldn’t freely express his love. After she split from hubby Kris Humphries, West was free and clear to date his one true love. Although he has been protective of their relationship and their daughter North West, a topless Kardashian joined her man on the front of a motorcycle in his “Bound 2” video. The video sparked controversy and was spoofed by funny man Seth Rogen and James Franco.
Wayna Morris and Brandy
R&B singer Brandy was always the wholesome girl next door so when she started dating Boyz II Men member Wayna Morris, the two did their best to keep their relationship secret. Five years her senior, Brandy has said Morris was her first love. They dated for a year and he was featured on her song “Brokenhearted,” which the couple shot an accompanying music video for. Dumping her a month before her 19th birthday, Brandy was left feeling brokenhearted in real life.
Keyshia Cole and Jeezy
R&B singer Keyshia Cole definitely has an edge to her, which is why it seemed natural she would be romantically linked to Atlanta rapper Jeezy. They reportedly dated for a year and a half and were even engaged. That is until he allegedly cheated on her. Before their love went south, Jeezy recruited Cole for his inspirational “Dreamin” song and the two starred in the music video together. Cole sparked rumors of reconciliation with Jeezy several months ago by attending his birthday party without wearing her wedding ring.
Robin Thicke and Paula Patton
Robin Thicke and Paula Patton have been together forever. Childhood sweethearts, Thicke and Patton tied the knot in 2005. Patton stuck by her man while he struggled to get his music career off of the ground and while he’s a household name now, his right-hand woman has not changed. Thicke recruited his wife to star in his “Lost Without You,” track off of his second album “The Evolution of Robin Thicke.” An actress by trade, Patton had no problem playing his love interest and it was obvious the onscreen chemistry between the two was much more than an act.
Pink and Carey Hart
Singer Pink isn’t afraid to ask for what she wants. The pop/punk singer started dating motocross racer Carey Hart in 2001 and it was she who asked for his hand in marriage. They wed in 2006 but two years later it looked like the couple was headed for divorce court. Proving that absence does make the heart grow founder, they have since reconciled. Hart has appeared onscreen next to his wife in several of her music videos including “True Love” and “Just Give Me A Reason.” Hart was also featured in Pink’s “So What.” The couple welcomed their first child Willow in 2011.
