Lupita Nyong’o And Oprah Land Covers On W Mag’s Movie Issue

January 8, 2014  |

Award season is certainly upon us, as is evidenced by the ladies covering the latest magazines on newsstands. W magazine had the privilege of granting Lupita Nyong’o her first major fashion mag cover by placing the beauty on the front of their February issue titled “The Movie Issue,” and they’ve also given another notable woman shine with a separate cover: Oprah.

Oprah, of course, stunned audiences this summer as the wife of Cecil Gaines in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” and ever since “12 Years a Slave” hit theaters this fall, critics and audiences haven’t been able to stop talking about Lupita Nyongo’s performance as Patsey. She told W Mag:

“When I got the role in 12 Years a Slave, I called my father and said, ‘Daddy, I got a part in a movie! Do
you know Brad Pitt?’ And he said, ‘I’ve heard of him,
but I don’t know him personally.’ I said, ‘Well—he’s producing this movie, and he’s really big in Hollywood.’ My father paused and then said, ‘So you have a job! Good. Congratulations! And good night!’ That call
put everything in perspective.”

We’re pretty sure Lupita will be getting plenty more calls after her knockout performance, particularly if she takes home a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress this Sunday. Aside from their “Movie Issue” covers, which also feature Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, and Amy Adams, W magazine also paid homage to what they consider to be the year’s best performances and shouted out Chiwetel Ejiofer, Idris Elba, and Michael B. Jordan among others. Check out their photo shoots and quotes on their thoughts on some of their most interesting work on the next few pages.
