When you think of iconic television fathers, “The Fresh Prince’s” Uncle Phil always comes to mind, which is why we hate to report that the man who played this endearing character, James Avery, has passed.

TMZ just broke the news saying the 65-year-old actor died in a Glendale, CA hospital  New Year’s eve. Avery had apparently undergone open heart surgery and suffered complications late yesterday. TMZ’s source says Avery’s wife, Barbara, had been at his bedside for most of the day but left for a short period of time and when she returned she was informed that her husband had passed. She and Avery had been married since 1988.

Alfonso Ribeiro expressed his sadness over this great loss on Twitter, writing:

Tatyana Ali also shared a tweet about Avery’s passing:

We know he certainly will be missed. Rest in peace. Check out other co-stars remembering James Avery in the video below.

This is the news that caught me off guard today. I thought he was such a good actor who had he the desire to be a star could have done just that. In other related passings of black actors, the mother from Imitation of Life passed away yesterday as well. May James Avery and Juanita Moore both rest in peace.

I loved the episode with Ben Verene as well. I loved it when Uncle Phil and Will hugged at the end. RIP.

So sad that James Avery is gone, my mom and I were fans of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air back in the day and even order pizza from a pizza shack around our house on Mondays so she and my siblings can eat while watching the Fresh Prince, even in reruns while it was on NBC. May Mr. Avery rest in paradise, he will never be forgotten. What a talented man.
