The Year Of The Struggle: Celebs Who Had A Rough 2013
While some celebrities had a very successful year, others are all too happy 2013 is coming to an end, especially these stars.WENN
In just a few short years, Lamar Odom went from winning the Sixth Man of the Year award with the Los Angeles Lakers to an unemployed NBA player who allegedly disappears on crack binges for days at a time. Instead of suiting up to play in the 2013-14 season, Odom has been mysteriously absent. Although his wife of four years initially vowed to stand by her husband’s side while he battles drug addiction, even Khloe Kardashian-Odom has her limits. After weeks of speculation, the reality television star has filed for divorce and asked the courts to officially drop her married name.
As one-third of the Fugees, then as a solo artist, Lauryn Hill once dominated the charts and the music world. The New Jersey native dropped out of the public eye to raise a family and only reemerged a few years ago to take to the stage once again. While Hill has done her best to stay out of the limelight, her name and mug shot were plastered all over the place after she pled guilty to tax evasion. Sentenced to three months in prison, Hill dropped her first single in over a decade before she went into the big house. The single, “Neurotic Society,” was bashed by critics and fans alike, which was not the best send off for anyone going away to jail. Hill was released from prison in October a few days early because of good behavior.
Even though he welcomed his first child into the world and proposed to his baby mama in grand fashion, Kanye West’s professional life took a hit this year. This year’s Yeezus album wasn’t so well received and many blamed his fiancé Kim Kardashian. His Yeezus tour hasn’t faired that well either. Several shows had to be postponed after a truck crashed and damaged some of the stage equipment. And his tour stop in Kansas City had less than 4,500 people in attendance even though the venue could hold up to 19,000 people. An easy target for the paparazzi, West’s multiple scuffles with photographers have been caught on video and have since gone viral, which doesn’t help his image of an out of control divo.
Chris Brown’s image took a serious hit after his assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 and he has yet to fully recover. Breezy started 2013 off by scuffling with fellow singer Frank Ocean outside of a recording studio in Los Angeles. In the summer, Brown’s bail was revoked after a hit and run crash. Although the charges were later dropped, Brown found himself in handcuffs once again, this time for felony assault in D.C. Ready to face his problems, he checked himself into rehab for anger management following the October arrest. Instead of ending 2013 on a positive note, Brown’s probation was revoked and he is due back in court in February 2014 and could be facing jail time.
On last season of VH1’s “Love & Hip-Hop,” Peter Gunz made a few guest appearances to give his friend and business partner Rich Dollaz some advice so we assumed the one-hit wonder rapper had his life together, right? Wrong. After joining the cast, Gunz’ messy life was exposed. Caught up in a love triangle that’s playing out on national television, audience members were shocked to find out while living with his baby mama and girlfriend of 13 years, he upped and married the artist he’s supposed to be managing. Gunz revealed that he went on the show because he had no money and since he couldn’t keep up with the charade too much longer, he figured he might as well capitalize off of it and get paid. Messy.
Beauty queen Kenya Moore was added to the cast of “Real Housewives of Atlanta” to bring spice to the show and that she did. Not only did she beef and battle with the other castmates, she became the butt of jokes after her “relationship” with her boyfriend Walter was revealed to be staged just for the show. Kenya also made the faux pas of texting Phaedra’s husband Apollo, which further painted her as crazy and a man-stealer. Things could be picking up for Moore, who dreams of settling down and starting a family of her own. She is rumored to be dating the son of the wealthiest Black woman on the planet. In other words, he’s rich, very rich.
Joe and Teresa Guidice
“Real Housewives of New Jersey” stars Teresa and Joe Guidice were the epitome of a successful New Jersey couple. They lived big, spent big, have a big family and even love and fight big. And now they could be facing some serious time in the big house. Over the summer, the court handed down a 39-count indictment and the couple has been charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud and bank fraud. And this is on top of filing for bankruptcy and trying to get their finances under control. If convicted, they both face 20 years in prison. Additionally, Joe could end up deported since he is a citizen of Italy and not the U.S.
Every weekday DJ Mister Cee mans the one’s and two’s at New York’s Hot 97 radio station. A staple in the music game, Mister Cee has worked with some of rap’s biggest legends and is partly responsible for introducing the world to Biggie Smalls, but his personal life began to overshadow his career accomplishments. On several occasions, the famed radio personality had been caught with his pants down either soliciting or receiving oral from cross-dressing street walkers. In September, audio from another encounter was released and buckling from the embarrassment, Mister Cee resigned. Thankfully, he decided to stay on the radio after admitting he has been fighting demons.
Women of “The Gossip Game”
VH1 used to be a network solely dedicated to music but with the rise in popularity of reality shows, the network has shifted focus. While many of their reality shows are instant hits with fans, one show had the opposite effect. “The Gossip Game” centered around the lives of seven media personalities in New York and immediately the show was panned for its ratchetness. Angela Yee, K. Foxx, Ms. Drama, Kim Osorio, JasFly, Sharon Carpenter and Vivian Billings just couldn’t get along and after just eight episodes and numerous arguments, the show aired its series finale.
When he signed a blockbuster deal that brought him to the New York Yankees, many thought Alex Rodriguez would help the team win the World Series. No such luck. A-Rod started 2013 on the DL list after undergoing surgery on his hip. While recovering, his name was repeatedly tied to the steroids scandal that was currently hovering over the league. Just when he returned to the Yankees line-up, it was announced that Rodriguez would face a suspension for lying about using steroids. Not one to give up without a fight, A-Rod has retaliated by filing lawsuits against the MLB, its commissioner Bud Selig and the New York Yankees team doctor.
Justin Bieber burst onto the music scene as an adorable pre-pubescent teen with a sweet voice. Since then he’s gone on to become one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Growing up in the public eye probably hasn’t been easy for the Canadian singer. As part of his world tour, Biebs has managed to make headlines for his somewhat bratty behavior. Paparazzi caught an enraged Bieber scuffling with a photographer in London. While out in Brazil, he was cited for vandalism after he was caught spray-painting a wall. Over in China, he had his bodyguard carry him up the Great Wall. In Rio de Janeiro, Bieber was busted leaving a brothel with two women. And let’s not forget the countless photographic evidence of underage drinking and marijuana use.
Anyone who gets an ice cream cone tattooed on his face clearly has problems, but that hasn’t stopped fans from wishing rapper Gucci Mane would finally get his act together. Although he released several projects in 2013, it was his arrests that made headlines. Treating the jail cell like it has a revolving door, Gucci Mane, real name Radric Davis, was arrested twice in March for assault. After spending three weeks in jail, Gucci Mane was quiet for just a while but he then caused quite a stir on twitter after bashing several rappers including Nicki Minaj, Drake and Rick Ross. He blamed the twitter spaz on binging on codeine and promethazine and vowed to check himself in rehab but that would have to wait. In December, the Atlanta rapper was charged with two counts of firearm possession and is looking at 20 years in the slammer.
At the beginning of 2013, Paula Deen was sitting at the top of the world. Raking in over $7 million a year, the Queen of Butter had her own cooking show, numerous endorsements and several restaurants under her belt. All of that was in jeopardy when a deposition revealed that Deen had used the N-word. Within a matter of weeks, the Food Network decided not to renew her show and most of her endorsements fell by the wayside. No one is looking forward to 2014 more than Deen, who did the wise thing and has stayed out of the public eye for the rest of the year.
He may have been in two of this year’s most talked about movies but Terrence Howard’s off-screen antics dominated the headlines more than his movie roles. Howard married second wife Michelle Ghent in 2010 but the ensuing divorce lasted longer than the marriage. Court papers revealed Howard was a little too hands on with his wife and she filed for a restraining order because she was in fear of her life. To cap off the year, Howard was reportedly evicted from his New York City condo in December after falling more than $50,000 behind in rent. However, Howard won’t be ringing 2014 in alone. After a month of dating, Howard is now hitched to wife number three.
He went from an adorable Disney kid to the star of the blockbuster Transformers franchise, but in 2013 Shia LaBeouf wanted to flex his acting chops on Broadway. Cast in the play Orphans, opposite Alec Baldwin, LaBeouf butted heads with the “30 Rock” star and soon found himself fired. Instead of going away quietly, LaBeouf vented his frustrations on twitter, bringing even more attention to the spat. Infamous for bar brawls, LaBeouf once again was involved in a scuffle at a London bar just a few weeks ago. Ending the year on a sour note, LaBeouf’s short film HowardCantour.com has been accused of plagiarizing a Daniel Brown comic to which LaBeouf admitted on twitter, “I f*cked up.”
