“F**k The Confederate Flag”: Kanye West’s Friend Q-Tip Calls Him Out For Using Flag
So we told you this week that Al Sharpton and the National Action Network had some words for Kanye West and planned to boycott the selling of his tour merchandise. The apparel has hit a sore spot with people because of the fact that some of it is adorned with the Confederate flag. West has actually been seen out in a jacket with the flag on the arm. When speaking on why he has been trying to push something that has been attached to slavery and oppression, West said he was actually trying appropriate and change the meaning. But in the end, he just thinks it looks dope:
“React how you want. Any energy you got is good energy. You know the confederate flag represented slavery in a way — that’s my abstract take on what I know about it. So I made the song ‘New Slaves.’ So I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It’s my flag now. Now what are you going to do?
I just think people look cool in it. They look nice. And it’s colorless also. It’s super hood and super white boy approved at the same time. That’s really what my style has always been.”
But Q-Tip, who works has produced music for West, and is actually signed to West’s G.O.O.D. Music while touring with him for a few dates on the Yeezus Tour with A Tribe Called Quest decided to share his thoughts on Twitter. While he made it clear that he has much love for his friend, the same can’t be said for the Confederate flag:
F**k the confederate flag
I love Kanye no shots but my people continue to suffer psychologically from hardships that happened under that banner
I’m not mad at him. You can be friends with anybody and still stand by what you know is right and speak out against what’s wrong, even if it’s something said friend is a fan of. Too many celebrities get their checks and just go with the flow, but a person with the least amount of sense should know that running around with a Confederate flag on your back or on the arm of your jacket is a silly move, especially as a black man or woman. What do you think of what the Tribe Called Quest rapper had to say?
