‘He Really Did Love Broken Down, Little Old Me:’ Mary J. Blige On Knowing Kendu Isaacs Was The One
If you’re familiar with Mary J. Blige’s story, you know that she credits her husband, Kendu Isaacs, in helping her to turn her life around by loving her despite her struggles and shortcomings. During a recent appearance on The Queen Latifah Show, Mary gushed about her love. Though it may sound funny, she admits that it took her awhile to even get used to the idea that someone actually wanted to marry her.
“Even after I was married, I still couldn’t believe it–that it was real–and he really did love broken down, little old me. I just never saw myself like the woman that a man like him would want. My past was just horrific. I felt ashamed about everything. Me dropping out of high school, me not, you know, just not being beautiful enough. I just didn’t feel like I was smart enough or beautiful enough, you know, for years,” the Queen of Hip Hop Soul confessed.
As for how she knew that Kendu was “the one,” Mary credits her intuition.
“I didn’t sense anything fake or energy that [he] was afraid of me–not like he would hurt me in anyway. He wasn’t afraid to do what everybody else was afraid to do, which was tell me truth and help me and give me the information that I needed when I was dying from alcohol. He came at the right time when I was ready to change,” the “Mr. Wrong” singer said.
Speaking of intuition, Mary says the ability to trust her gut is something she never wants to lose.
“I don’t ever want to doubt myself and my intuition and just knowing when things are right and when they are wrong. I don’t ever want to lost that because thats what has gotten me this far.”
