Do You Have What It Takes to Work for Yourself?

December 21, 2010 ‐ By Demetria Irwin

1. Get organized
Organization will be your saving grace. When you have to haggle with a client about payment, verify that you sent something or provide a copy of an important document, your immaculate filing system will be your best friend. Give yourself a head start by beginning your work-from-home journey on an organized note.

Excellent article, except for the whole not working in your pajamas thing.

  • This helps a ton! I'll be opening my own jewelry shop in the spring of next year. I never thought about how much all the supplies would cost including shipping.

  • This advice is seriously on point!!!!! So many people fail to realize that being a freelancer means that in addition to the work you did at your old job, you are now also a receptionist, book keeper, human resources rep (you have no idea how much they battle with insurance companies for you!), boss, sales rep, marketing exec, and so much more! Being your own boss is liberating but not in the ways that most people think.

  • I've worked for myself my entire adult life and I must say, this article is spot on. I cannot stress how important putting work clothes on and actually getting out of the house are. Very good read Demetria; possibly your best yet.
