Actress Jada Pinkett-Smith decided to take a rather long stroll down memory lane. What she came back with were vintage photos, dating back to her high school years, of she and lifelong friend, Tupac Shakur.

“We met at Baltimore School for the Arts. It was the first day and he came over to me and introduced himself. In high school, Pac was a little funny looking. Definitely from looking at him, he definitely wasn’t the type of cat that I would even deal with. He was like a magnet, he sort of sucked you in. We hit it off from that moment on,” Jada revealed during an interview for a documentary preceding the rapper’s death.

Jada went on to describe the nature of their friendship.

“He was like a brother. It was beyond friendship for us, it’s really difficult to explain. The type of relationship we had, you only get that once in a lifetime. He was like a brother/ father figure to me. He was very protective. We took care of each other, we took really good care of each other… the best that we could.”

In the 2003 documentary, Tupac Resurrection, the slain rapper can also be seen speaking fondly of Jada.

“Jada is my heart. She will be my friend my whole life,” he says.

Seeing the two of them discuss their strong bond is certainly enough to make you a little misty eyed.

People who become famous happen to always be or grew up with other famous people…hmmmmm!

  • stragi25

Which further convinces me that if he were alive they would have probably been together. Will wouldn’t have a had a chance…

i love it when uneducated ppl still think Pac was a thug, he studied acting and ballet at that school, dont u see him in that Micheal Jackson sweater?? and yes he knew and visited his father in prison several times.Btw if your ever at Barnes and Noble, they carry his book of poetry. He wrote a poem about Jada…

You sound uneducated about Pac yourself. Thug life wasn’t about being a gangster. Pac had a rough life and wanted to help those in the hood. He went to arts school while broke to try to better his future, he didn’t even graduate he was sent out west. He didn’t know his father until ’94 when he got shot and hid dad showed up in the hospital.

Their friendship and respect is worth preserving. I see the story of their friendship is really admirable and remembered. Hopefully though no longer together, it is still lasting forever

I believe they were soul mates but not in a romantic relationship type of way. Not sure if anyone remembers the BET talk show back in the Donny Simpson days with a light skinned lady and she would do sort of a Oprah next chapter type inteview. I remember Jada’s and I remember 2Pacs and they were soul mates but not romantically. It was on a really different level that when they spoke you understood it but it is really hard to relay in words. I would absolutley love to see those inteviews again – purely genuine before all the money, west-east cost issue and scientology. Just young people from a hard life trying to make it and found an out. Those interviews are truly classic. Wish I could watch them again right now. That was when I decided I totally respected who Jada Pinkett was – not sure if she is the same person now but from that interview I have to believe she has not wavered and the tears for Pac may be because there is no other single person, not even her husband that has that bond and knows that girl from back then.

      Well said.

I always kinda felt like if Tupac stayed alive, they would of ended up together…

  • sammi_lu

That shaved head was the best move Tupac ever made!

  • granky161

Aww they were so cute. Soul mates.

This made me a little teary eyed. Their friendship seemed so real and unconditional. Thats awesome.

I agree with the both of you, and I was going to type something similar. I love their friendship, and hearing about it. Not experiences this type of friendship they shared, and not everyone is deserving of this type of love.

    • Just sayin

I was Just about to say the same thing! I’m teary eyed. I had the coincidence of talking to Tupac on the phone in college. He wasn’t famous then (very funny and sweet) and it Always amazed me when he did become famous how Hard he became so I can understand him being nurturing to her. It was like Holding on to who he really was…

      • Jacara Fatin

Wow! But thats very true. I think we naturally show different sides or aspects of ourselves to different people. That’s so great. Were you studying journalism/communications and doing an article or just doing a special project to get the chance to speak with him?

        • Patanisha

Pure happenstance! I lived on a predominately white college campus and we had a mutual friend named Kevin. Tupac lived where Kevin was from and I found it Hilarious that a brotha from “Marin” considered himself a rapper. I use to tease him and tell him to come to Oakland. After I found out who he was, I saw why he thought I was so funny. I didn’t know Marin had a hood, I only knew it as an upscale area.

I met Tupac in Atlanta he was so cool a little goofy even and very intelligent I think his rap persona was geared toward an image that went with gansta rap

I love the relationship that had. I wonder how things would have been for the 2 of them if he was still alive…I also wonder how Will feels about their relationship. Jada obviously loved this man a lot. Willow even says that Jada cries for Pac sometimes.

    • MuscleMansWoman

Jada is reportedly pretty cool with Will’s ex-wife also. It’s probably just one of those things where her and Will have that type of respect and understanding for their past.
