An ordinary city block can sometimes become an annoying or even terrifying gauntlet of cat calls,  desperate staring and unwanted advances.  It’s nice to know that someone finds you attractive, but some men don’t seem to know how to do that in a calm, respectful manner.

We’ve all experienced funny and not-so funny moments when confronted with street holler. One very important thing about responding to this situation is to always keep your safety in mind first. This might mean not saying “F#$k off!” like you would prefer to do, so as not to escalate an already uncomfortable encounter.

Here are a few common types of street holler and what you can do to avoid making the situation worse.

@ashley….does that ever work on a woman? Yes and it never fails in Dallas, Tx. This is how these women out here get their self worth.

Absolutely hilarious and soooo true that this is exactly how it goes!! A lot of times, the more you engage the worse they get. Your best bet is to keep it short, firm and respectful…. and get away from them!! LOL

As much as you are right about not engaging these fools, if they are the type that I know isn't gonna pop one in my ass, I will say something to them. That street holla stuff is very disrespectful. I don't like that kind of stuff, and as a younger woman was subject to that, and I came from a household where I wasn't even allowed to have boys as friends, so I was fully unprepared. Now… Don't go there with me, I'm not a little kid, you aren't going to talk about my body parts, you aren't going to 'shame' me by calling me ugly, you definitely aren't going to touch or follow me. And I will tell you all of this loud enough for everyone within a block to hear if I feel threatened, because you are the one that needs shame. Sorry fellas, but I got a man, and it ain't you and he got to be that by doing to opposite of what you are doing.

Additionally, does that ever work on any woman?? I'm afraid to know the answer…

Good article! I found myself chuckling through all the scenarios, because I have lived out EVERYONE. Hold fast…minus the stalker guy type!

The number one rule that most ladies don't follow is the golden rule of keeping your cool. No need to go off on tangents or stooping to the males level because it just foreshadows…DISASTER!
