I’m really late commenting on this, but I wish the entire interview was shown, because it the entire conversation went like this, it seems to me that the host of the show could not get past the light skin privilege thing. Soledad has probably heard this from the black community all of her life, so fortunately, she was prepared for this. I just wonder if we as a society will ever get past the perception that light skin automatically means he or she always has the advantage.

Why are dark Black Americans scary to other Black Americans? That’s always been on my mind. Why are so many women trying to change their color? Why does the black community keep itself separate? Why do black people hide their white friendships from their black friends? What is equality if you want to remain separate from white, hispanic, asian and other people? What do we want this world to be? Color blind doesn’t seem to be the answer for many in the black community.

I don’t see myself as “black” but African.
