You Mad, Huh? 20,000 People Sign Change.org Petition Protesting “Fifty Shades Of Grey” Cast
Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson
It’s clear that some people are just way too invested in Fifty Shades of Grey. On Monday, it was announced that the lead characters had been picked for the film, with Sons of Anarchy cutie Charlie Hunnam playing Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson (daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith) playing Anastasia Steele. While they might not be the biggest names, for producers, they definitely had the skills to carry this highly-anticipated film. But then again, that was just the opinion of producers. I didn’t say anything about the fans.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, many manic fans of the book were extremely upset about the casting choices made for the film, so much so that a Change.org petition has been created to “change” the leading lady and man. They want to have Hunnam replaced with actor Matt Bomer from the show White Collar, and have Johnson replaced with former Gilmore Girls star, Alexis Bledel. The petition says, and in annoying bold caps:
Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE And I read the whole trilogy and I can assure that Matt is the perfect actor for this movie and Alexis too. So please PLEASE, all of the GREYsessed and Bomerettes in the world NEED those actors. They always will be for us the Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. WE CAN DO ANYTHING GUYS, ANYTHING.
People from Italy to Spain and Houston to Yonkers, NY have signed the petition already, helping it amass more than 20,000 signatures since it was started earlier in the week. And if that wasn’t enough, some fans even attacked the movie and its producers on Twitter, including producer Dana Brunetti, who responded to the backlash via Twitter. He says that just because fans like an actor for the film, doesn’t mean they had the chemistry or TALENT to play the role:
there is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.
So if your favorite wasn’t cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective
People are far too ready to hate things before they have a chance to see the end results, and while this Change.org petition has some major followers, I doubt producers will change the cast based on it. If they do, folks will try to have creative control over everything, and one minute it will be the cast, next the title, the script, and on and on…
