Cleveland Kidnapper Ariel Castro Found Hanged In Prison Cell
After being sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years just one month ago, convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro was found dead in his prison cell at the Corrections Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, USA Today reports.
In an e-mail regarding the incident, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction’s office of communications chief, JoEllen Smith, revealed that 53-year-old Castro—who was being held in protective custody— was in a cell by himself when he was found hanged around 9:20 p.m. Smith went on to say that after the department’s medical staff attempted to revive him, he was transported to The Ohio State Medical University Wexner Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m.
“A thorough review of this incident is underway and more information can be provided as it becomes available pending the status of the investigation,” Smith wrote.
In a statement to NBC News, Castro’s attorney, Craig Weitraub, revealed that his client’s family is “devastated by the news.” Weintraub added that while many people’s reactions to the news of his client’s death may be “good riddance,” he intends to “get to the bottom” of the circumstances surrounding his death.
“This is a human being. We are not going to let this go,” he told reporters.
As you probably recall, Castro is responsible for the disappearances of three Ohio women, Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and DeJesus, who went missing between 2002 and 2004. All three of the women were found alive after their miraculous escape and rescue back in May.
