September is shaping up to be a good month for music. Last weekend the “Made In America” festival happened. Tamar Braxton’s album dropped today and in a week, Janelle Monae’s second official studio album, Electric Lady will hit stores.
Earlier this summer we mentioned that Janelle Monae and Prince would collaborate for this album. What we didn’t know was whether or not we’d get a chance to listen to this track before the EP came out. Well, friends the music gods have smiled on us because today, you get to hear the very song the man, the myth, the legend Prince himself, felt was worthy of his musical genius. It’s called “Givin’ Em What They Love.”
It’s a rocker song through and through with thick drums you can bob to. Prince and Janelle take turns vocalizing and backing each other up. Janelle does that melodic whine she does while Prince goes for a higher register. It blend masterfully.
Being that Prince doesn’t link up with new artists everyday, Janelle Monae expressed her gratitude in her Billboard cover story:
“I had a chance to produce an icon. It’s not every day that he collaborates. I’m honored and humbled that he trusted me. He is forever my friend, and I am forever indebted. I can’t say too much else about it.”
Yeah there’s not much else to say. It’s hot fire. Take a listen to the track below and let us know if you agree.
Janelle Monae’s album will be out on next Tuesday, September 10.
