It’s not often that 3-time Grammy Award-winning producer Pharrell Williams opens up about his private life, but when he does, he has our full attention. During a recent interview with the Today Show, the “Blurred Lines” producer touched on everything from his childhood to his amazing relationship with his fiancée and his little boy, Rocket. Check out his interview highlights below.

On his success:

“I’m just thankful to be the punctuation in a sentence. I don’t have to be the subject or the predicate. No [I haven’t been seeking after the limelight] and it’s odd [that the limelight has found me], but it’s awesome. It really is. There are a lot of great songs out right now that we all love and feel great about and I have a couple of them in there and that’s [does thumbs up motion].”

On his first musical memory:

“Probably my most memorable moment would be when I was a child, we went to a place called Kings Dominion. It’s like an amusement park. I wandered off and my mom and dad didn’t know where I was. It’s pretty funny, but they found me dancing over where Kenny Rogers was playing. I can’t believe I just told that story.”

On meeting his partner Chad Hugo at band camp:

“One yearrrr…. when I was at band camp…. [laughs]. Most of us were kind of nerdy. None of us sort of walked in like Kurt Cobaine or Dave Grohl cool, but we got the last laugh.”

On his creative process:

“I can write pretty much anywhere, but in the shower is where it’s like, really great. ‘Hot in Here’ [came from the shower]. Maybe a third of my catalog [came from the shower].”

On his relationship with fiancée, Helen:

“It’s awesome. I can’t tell anyone what to do. I can’t give anyone relationship advice, but the bestie thing is awesome. Yeah [she’s my best friend]. Every night is like a sleepover.”

On his son, Rocket:

“I always say the best song that I’ve ever co-written was my son.”
